Shaunm41 14
I have a friend who lives near blackpool with about half an acre of land where he keeps ducks.. When the ducks have ducklings the seagulls swoop in and take them and hes asked me if I know what to do to stop them.. I dont have a clue, so hoping someone can help me out here? what options does he have and is it likely to be expensive? Thanks Shaun Quote Link to post
ferretsandhawks 47
get someone with a bird of prey to fly it there a good few times a week. Quote Link to post
ferretsandhawks 47
but they need to be carefull that the ducklings dont get taken so best to do it a while before just to keep them back, some birds of prey will not land on the water so could be lucky Quote Link to post

Thats what i would have said, but im not sure on the laws on shooting them, then again they are doin harm.Has he tried a gas banger that the farmers use in the tillage fields, they can be set to fire fairly regulary, might work. craigyboy 1,274
it depends what kind of gulls they are mate,if i remember rightly there are 3 gulls on the defra list that can be shot if they are causing damage, the herring gull and the great and lesser blacked backed gulls, but be warned they certainly aint airgun quarry, they are very big aggressive birds, especially when your shooting at em Quote Link to post
martync1967 64
solution is a harris hawk Quote Link to post
craigyboy 1,274
solution is a harris hawk with the potential grief that could arise from shooting em,then i think id agree wi ya mate Quote Link to post

air gun ant 1,666
the only gull left on the general licence is the lesser black backed gull. i looked in to it a while ago Quote Link to post
Millet 4,497
Thanks for all your replys.. I will mention harris hawk to him.. Thought I might be able to use it as an excuse to talk the mrs into letting me buy another harris but shes having none of it.. haha.. I have seen harris hawk's mobbed and chased away by gull's and if a faster more aggressive bird is flown the gull's will more than likely bail out into the water..i would be shooting the horrible thing's if it was my problem but only the bird's on the legal list.. Shaunm41 14
Thanks for the replys, I looked on the general license today and 'air gun ant' is correct, the lesser black-backed gull is the only one left on the general licence.. The guy is going to let me know what gulls they are.. If there the lesser black-backed gull I will try find someone in the area willing to have a go.. I would imagine shooting a few isnt going to make much difference though as id imagine there is thousands in the area.. Quote Link to post
