benjamin_80 0
Well i just joined this forum and didn't know it existed!.I thought id put a thread up about my male Britt Robbie. He's just under 2 years old and ive had a roll-coaster ride with him so far.To say they are headstrong is a understatement i think,id say there HOT dogs and you can get burnet! Robbie will heel and quarter, stop at around 300 feet tops and holds game(greys) impaticluar very well.I have a e-collar but just don't use it and have found if im patient he gets it eventually and repetition etc helps as well as making it fun.I said from day 1 i didn't want a robot dog at all,and wanted him to keep flair at all costs. And he's starting to just get it better now. When he busted birds i used to lose my rag now i let him learn that he needs to point and hold,he learnt this himself of course!.Anyhow he doesn't retrive to my hand and since hell be flown under a peregrine next year i hope it doesn't really matter.Anyone wanna share pearls of wisdom on retrieving?.Cheers ben- Quote Link to post

Mooch. 177
Welcome to the site. Like you say, if the dog won't be used for retrieving it might be best not to teach it how much fun it is. However, to get a dog to retrieve to hand I'd send the dog for the dummy. Once the dog reaches the dummy call it back then turn around and walk in the opposite direction. When the dog gets near call it into heel but keep walking. Then, while still walking, reach down and gently remove the dummy from your dogs mouth and then stop and give lots of praise. The next stage would be do all of the above but stop walking before taking the dummy and eventually don't walk at all. Personally I like my dog to come to me and sit before holding the dummy up for me to take but it is by no means essential. Good luck! Just watched a programme about Brittanys doing field trials in America. Nice looking dogs and good workers, I might consider one for my next dog! Quote Link to post

fatboy 0
Brittany's are great dogs, and as you have discovered they are head strong,my dog Jake is used for rough shooting, and retrieves rabbits and pigeons woodcock etc, sometimes to hand sometimes not,i find mine is not manic like a springer, but tends to stick his head in undergrowth and smell what's there,he is great on woodcock and pheasant. You do all the work and training and then become frustrated when it goes wrong in the field, but one day it just clicks into place and it feels great,Jake is a great companion in the field, and also in the pigeon hide. As you will have noticed brittanys have a great nose, and Jake rarely fails to find a shot pigeon. Today i shot a rabbit but caught the back end and split the gut,so when Jake wasn't looking i threw it on top of a hedge,a couple of minutes later he trotted up the field to me with the rabbit that i last saw 5 foot in the air in a blackthorn hedge.
