TWOTWOTHREE 152
Hi there I asked a simlar question a few years back when I first got my variation for a 223.everyone kept sayin buy new but its each to their own,I did the opposite and went for a second hand Remington 700 ADL and stuck a leupold vari xlll and wildcat moderator on the pointy end, but as much as I keep looking at the tip top rifles in in the mags I would never change it's mad how well it suits me,lenth weight and wat I need it for,and not to blow my own trumpet, wish I could ha ha but I can sharpen a pencil at a good distance with it after years of experimenting,it's never let me down,I shot a mates tikka and I couldn't have shot my own foot, so I'm a little bias bit try a few if anyone you know can let u,I got lucky first time but from other feedback I've received I can be frustrating if a rifle doesn't suit you, atb 223!! pestcontrol121 11
Some good second hand deal out there, just make sure you try before you buy if going down the S/Hand road, you should be getting 1/2" groups at 100yards or if home loads a bit better. As to what make that would be up to you as to your budget and what suits your eye, most .223 are as good as each other out to the 150 + yards if you find the right ammo or reload your own. akton 15
It all depends on what you can afford, Howa, Sako, Tikka, Remmington, the rifle is only a bit of the costs, then you need a moderator, and of course a good scope, Whatever you decide, read alot about the subject, especially the quality of your purchase, I have used several rifles and my preference is sako or Tikka But thats my take on it, see what they preform like, they all shoot accurately out of the box Quote Link to post

Carlowhunter 27
I bought a Tikka T3 Hunter three years ago and will never part with it ! Great gun ! Quote Link to post
fox_hunter 1
Ok. Think I will get tikka T3. Wildcat moderator and zeiss scope Quote Link to post
Treacle Trackpad 6
Think about what bullets you want to fire too, if you want to go heavier than 55-60 you will need a fater twist which will narrow down the offerings quite a bit. Quote Link to post

markha 99
I bought a Remington 700 Police second hand, most hunting rifles have only had a small amount of rounds down the tube so worrying about a worn barrel is not worth losing sleep over as it takes many thousands of rounds before wear occurs. Wilcat Pred 8 is a good mod, just make sure you get the correct size for your bore, and get the longest baffle stack otherwise you will be dissapointed with the sound attenuation, the standard ones are still quiet loud even from behind the gun. They are a heavy moderator. Dont be stuck on Zeiss scopes, Leupold also make some very good glass for the same money, make sure you have a good look through many scopes, check for eye relief as they all vary slightly and also the colours of what you see change too between different scopes. Your paying a lot of money, make the right choice 1st time round. Choice of gun and weight for a fox/varmint riflecomes down to end use, do you have to stalk and walk and shoot short ranges, if so then a lighter set up might be better. If you have some very open permissions and can drive round your shooting area then maybe a heavier set up for a bit more long range varminting would be fine. If I was looking at 2nd hand again for a traditional rifle I would keep my eyes peeled for a Sako 75 type 1 action Quote Link to post
