hi lew

i would advise your stepdad to try another pellet 3/4 group @ 30yds is a bit of a wide spread, much tighter groups can be achieved with a better or domed pellet.if you need some air arms field .177 i can send you some to try!

Heres an odd one for you....

I've had my 90 for about 15 years now and for the first 12 it had a .177 barrel that was very pellet fussy and the only pellet I found that really grouped properly were H and N Baracudas and Bisley Magnums (same pellet...).

I then swapped to a .20 barrel and it shoots well with pretty much everything I've put through it so far with Barracudas and FTTs so far having the edge.

Here's the odd bit. My shooting pal, Paul, bought himself a used .22 90 a couple of years back and wanted to try .177 so I gave him the barrel that came off my own 90 with what was left of the last tin of Baracuds that I'd been happily using for him to use and the groups were sh*te

We tried a selection of the usual suspects with mixed results then settled on Crosman Premiers that gave really nice tight groups, but when that barrel was fitted to my own rifle, they sprayed all over the target...

I've no idea as to why the same barrel when fitted to different actions should produce such different results. Funny things, airguns....

Cheers.

Hi Bigmac.

From the user name you have I take it your a big fella :hmm:

Rifles off the shelf in a gun shop are pretty much a standard size/fit, and most people can get away with it.

Just a thought ......does your stock fit you, could you improve the feel of the rifle with a bit of tinkering, like extending the butt using spacers?

A good method to try is.....place your trigger finger arm straight down by your side, then bend at the elbow 90 degrees out in front of you, then form a fist with your trigger finger held naturally as though holding the trigger.

Measure the distance from the crease in your arm to the crook/finger pad, of your trigger finger, make a note of the measurement.

That measurement is a pretty good guide to the length of pull you will need.....compare it by measuring the rifle from butt pad to trigger and see if there is much difference?

It may all sound a bit anal, but anything you can do to improve the fit of your rifle will help with your shooting.

I know this is way off the question" which pellet " but its worth doing, especially if your a big fella and forcing a hold on your rifle, this could be why your having to move your head about to focus?

Are your mounts at the full extent of your scope rail, just curious ?

Eye relief should be as natural as possible, with no head movement back or forward to focus.

Worth trying.....assume your zeroing position, normaly prone, bring the rifle to the shoulder with your eyes closed, and feel for the natural hold of the rifle, now open your eyes and see what the sight picture is like, do this several times, lowering the rifle to the floor after each attempt.

Slacken off the mount screws so you can just about slide the scope in the rail, slide the mounts back or forward until your sight picture is obtained naturally each time, then tighten up agin.

Check also that the crosshairs are true and not causing you to cant the rifle when aiming.

Just a thought mate, hope some of this helps you out setting up

Hiya Bigmac.

Sorry to hear your having a bit of trouble there, can be frustrating at times cant it

Be interesting to see what happens with the new scope, could cure your woes.

Just a thought Mac, with the rifle closed ( uncocked ) put it between your knees and see if there is any movement where the rifle breaks,( side to side ) if its a fairly well used rifle, you may have a bit of shim wear........ just somthing else to eliminate

Worth checking your breech seal to buddy.

Also have a look at the end of the barrel see if the lip /crown has been damaged at all.

Some cheap pellets are ok, but most dont have a good consistancy in size or wieght.

Try to get her on the chrono too, that will give you a better idea of what the rifle is doing, and might point to the pressure in the ram, should be at 50Bar.

Pull the barrel through, and start again fresh after doing and checking the bits n bobs.

How old is the rifle Mac, and how long have you had it?
