Marsh Lad 321
My old beddy crosees were decent enough at the ferreting job but took time to build up alot patience. My collie x bitch has bags of patience and is second to none at marking Quote Link to post

johnny boy68 11,726
I use my lurcher for marking and catching.........A lurcher that marks well is a god send and they can cover a lot more ground covering holes if your ferreting alone. As Ideation said earlier we use his Whippet and my 2 lurchers........a very reliable team that can/do all ferreting jobs to a good standard. Quote Link to post
rob190364 2,594
Does anyone use just a dog with the ferts and leave the nets at home? This is going to by my first season using a dog and my intention is to use the nets as little as possible. Not bothered about massive bags, just looking forward to seeing the dog (hopefully) do the business on the bolters. Quote Link to post

I used to do it a lot Rob though it is dependant on the type of warrens your ferreting.........it can be action packed in the right areas. Quote Link to post

Yeah, the farm I go on had a lot of warrens actually in the hedgerows themselves, netting them was a ball ache, took forever and resulted in plently of tangles, should be easier with the dog on those warrens because I can cover a fair few warrens and any bolters are running into fields with no cover around. The other land I ferret has some exits in the open and some near cover so I'll net the ones near cover and leave the others open. Really looking forward to it to be honest, less setting up and more action, love it! Quote Link to post

When I first started out with my first lurcher I hardly used nets at all, the dug became very good at predicting, marking etc, if you can find the right balance between giving the dog direction and letting the dog use its own instincts its hard to beat, the dug the ferrets and yerself working as a team, cannae whack it Quote Link to post
KittleRox 2,147
not changing the topic but does anyone use sauki's or crosses?i will be using a salukix colliegrey with my terrier I commented on that dug when you first got it as a pup, I liked it then and I like it now, cracker if yer dugs broken to the ferrets get yerself oot there, don,t worry aboot the saluki in it, the collie should cancel it oot only joking mate, should do the job nae problem Quote Link to post
