Whelping Boxes - Designs, Dimensions, Pictures please

Recommended Posts

I would make the Whelping box at least 4ftx4ft.About 1fthigh.But the Most important bit is to put an Anti crush board on the Inside of the Whelping Box.This can be made out of 3x2 Timber.Put the 3x2 timber All around the Inside of the Box about 6" off the Base of the Box.

Made mine for about 25 quid.

If it's gonna be in an outside kennel I'd make the sides higher but if inside,

a foot or so high around the sides except for the front is ample.

Try and make the box at least a foot longer than the dog with enough width for her to stretch out.

HTH. Cheers, D.

I like the box to be long enough and wide enough for the bitch to lie at full stretch with a couple of inches of space all around her: there's less likelihood of pups getting squashed, and that also allows room for the pig rail: broom handle type dowling fixed around 3" off the floor and 2" in from the sides of the box: that way a pup can get stuck behind the bitch but be able to get under the rail and not squashed. You can usually do away with the rails once the pups are around 10 days old as they're big and strong enough to make their presence felt if the bitch does lie on them. Only the most clumsy and insensitive bitches lie on well grown pups: lurchers and greyhounds are usually pretty careful, but there is always the odd exception.

This one's mine pal, just made it....just need wood, screws, jigsaw, and a hour of your time...

one tip that i would pass on is to use the clips that you use to hold electric cable to the wall to hold

your anti crush bars in place, just get the biggest you can find...i think you'll be able to see from the photo what i mean...

jf1970, you know how to build one, then please could you describe how you made yours. All advice is welcome, thanks.

i cut 4 4ft x 1ft lenghts of board, drill a 1" wide hole in the board for the crush bars to go through ( i drilled the holes 6" from the bottom and 6" in from the side) i then cut out grooves in the boards so that they all fit together (no screws needed) i find making it this way that it is easy to assemble and take apart. i made one for a friend only a couple of weeks ago but i never took any pics, the pics of the one above are a good one, good and strong looking.

where are the anti-crush bars? i'm not having a go mate, only to me, a whelping box can only be called that if it has anti-crush bars. Otherwise it's just a box.
