Hi mate had the same problem a few years back got my self a shock collar only shocked the dog twice tgey learn quick when the collar is around there neck and it will work for you.one thing i will say is read up before using it just let the dog walk about with the collar for a week or two before shocking him or he may become aware and a dummy collar may be needed also get your self one with a tone/bleep on it.all tge best mate and if you get on it will work.

Well by the looks of it some expeiernced dog men have ha same issues so I'm gonna try a collar have a good read on circumstances in when it should be used, and plenty of walks an work

hello all as some may have read in the past my dog has been a handful to say the least......now nothing i do seems to be working with his behavior, treats, lunge rope, playing, stern tellings off you name ive tried it all bar a shock collar....

 

its like he has a mind of his own even when just on a general walk he just cannot behave he is 2 years old and just wondering before i give up all hope and get a new dog is he past it...... is he to old to learn otherwise. im the type of guy where i dont liek to give up too easily but even this is beyond me......he is a 3/8 5/8 bull greyhound he is a keen worker its just his attitude any advice would be ideal

do i stick it out or get a new dog?

Dont use a shock collar, unless you 100% clear in your mind what you want to achieve ,when to use it and where,,the collar works best if its used just to change his frame of mind in situations,,

what ever you achieve with it ,you wont achieve any sort of understanding between him and you,and that is where i would start from,

the first thing i would do is get a tug item to play with the mutt with, 1, it brings him into close proximity to you when in drive ,something he dont seem to be able to bear up till now,

2,it gives you a handle on him, you will always get the attention of a dog mad for play,with the item,

3,if forms a bond ,dogs form lasting relationships with other canines through play ,

4,it feels great for the dog,pure heaven,on his own doorstep,and your all part of it,

try it for a week ,he might not want to at first,because the two of you seem to be at loggerheads,but tease him with it and dont let him have any outside stimulation ,make sure hes hungry as well,and soon it will become very attractive to him,

do no other training with him for a week, if he wants to make any sort of contact let him, that includes jumping up,no discipline ,try to manage him and redirect him with the tug item,as a lure,,you need to bring the mutts attention back onto you,,its that simple, anything else and your mutt is going to end up in a dog home,and from there very few ever feel grass under their feet again,

put the lead on him ,get the tug toy,tease him ,get him mad for it,let him grab it,wrestle with it ,for 10/20 seconds let him win,he cant run off,get him to bring it ,take the other end ,wrestle again ,let him win,call him up, take the end, and so it goes on ,for 10 mins twice a day if ya can,,

your getting drive ,while having fun,and retrieve all thrown in together in one session,

give it a go bud, but i feel the way your thinking ,you might have already made your mind up on him,,best of luck,

i have a very similar breed of dog but he is now turning four was a nightmare at first but now is so smart its a pure pleasure to work with him ,keep your dog the best is about to come from him yet

you got it,,see how it goes ,at first he may not be too excited bout the item,if he has been corrected for coming into your space ,he may not trust it, but with no other stimulation he'll fall for it, hunger promotes activity too ,keep him hungry before play ,when he ends up with the item after play ,call him up ,introduce food to him ,take item ,feed out of hand ,if ya can,,if ya cant exchange toy for treat,,game over,,

encourage him verbally while playing,,good boy,strong dog ,,all that shite,

use the same phrases everytime you go out to him for play,,Ready Boy,, will get his attention ,call him up ,Come Boy,and when he comes to you,put on lead ,produce the toy not til then,that way he learns coming to you produces the toy'

same phrase everday,,he will begin to associate those words with play even when out,,a week should be a good length of time to see some sort of difference, if not 10 days,,you will know there is a change went he starts looking at you with interest , expectantly, you will be the one controlling his drive ,and thats the key to his heart,,because thats what drive is, its all heart,,best of luck,,pm if stuck,

if the dog isn't shy around you then really go overboard on the praise when your playing with him, try running about and get him interested to follow what your doing. You also need to higher your voice (most men have deep voices and can sound like they're mad with the dog even when saying "Good lad") Make your voice happy and act fun even if you do feel like a tw*t the dog should respond to you and play.

Do this when it's just you and the dog, no other distractions and who cares what you look & sound like.
