Shooting and lurcher work, compatible or not ???

I would be interested to know if many lads with running dogs on here, originally started off with a gun and come from a shooting background,

 

seems to be there's conflict between the two codes judging by some of the threads on here,,

 

a bloke i would have hunted with years ago who seemed very anti gun at the time , got a taste for it and after a while dropped the dogs like they were on fire,couldn't understand the attraction for it at the time and still dont,,it just seems to be loud, organised,and expensive,,everything im not

 

or do some lads float between both codes ??,,i can appreciate the work that goes into training a gun dog but that would be as far as my interest goes,,

They don't have to be incompatible, I love mooching with the lurcher and gun, though if I could only do one thing it would be the dog every time.

I'm only interested in pigeon shooting and have never been on an organised shoot so maybe thats the reason I enjoy the gun so much, you're on your own and unless you are on a big number of birds it's not that expensive, though it will never give me the thrill I get when I slip the dog on the lamp.

It can be done. I Started out with dogs, then got into game shooting. I must admit to having had a few sniffy comments when I turned up on a fairly prestigious shoot with my collie/beddy/whippet as a peg dog. Got even more when she proceeded to wipe the eyes of a few of the Labradors on the day.

 

I love a days mooching with dog and gun on my own too. They also come in handy for retrieving shot foxes

I do both, but Im still learning both trades. Started with shooting but always had an interest in running dogs and when circumstances permitted I went down that route to. I would love a lurcher that is relatively steady and bidable to work as a rough shooting dog but without loosing that prey drive when used for more traditional lurcher work. Im not really a gundog type person but perhaps a lurcher of the right breeding would suit both jobs. Half cross colley grey or even lab grey perhaps. That said I think sticking with lurchers for lurcher work and gundogs for shooting is a better bet.

I do both as well . I shoot a 223 rifle and a shotgun and love it all . I also have two lurchers and 5 ferrets for mooching ferreting and lamping! Nothing like a bit of rough shooting with the springer for fur and feather ! Shoot a few rabbits and foxes with the rifle but for me the best craic is watching my animals work and catch without the gun !

I've spent many a night walking the fields with dogs & guns together. Most people I know round here are the same.

ive worked lurcher and gun side by side on many occasion, and i will never forget my cur crashing through ice on a partially frozen pond to retrieve a duck whilst two well bred spaniels tippy toed around the edges.

 

as for organised shoots ive seen many a gundog turn into a lurcher when a rabbit bolts

I have been in to shooting for years and had gun dogs but have just got my first lurcher to take with me as I only shoot with air guns now so I need the extra help the lurcher can give

my lurcher/s go everywhere... rimfire/centrefire/shotgun..

 

The older lurcher will retrieve feather as well....

im very impressed with the amount of different work lads can turn there running dog to, just goes to show that the two codes can work hand in glove with each other,

 

ive just always had the idea that hunting with a runner, was a silent ,noiseless affair, not one that id associate with a gun, but if it works it works,and more power to ya,,

i do with mine, Bryn will stand like a rock when i go to shoot either with 12g or air rifle, which i think is brill as i didnt train him, he just done it him self A lurcher with a gun is a good combo if you it a bird Bryn will find it and bring it back, the only thing he not keen on his water he will go in but likes his feet on the floor . My pup Tod not to bad either, shot few clays last sunday , and they both just stood still 15 yds away. It was the 1st time Tod had heard+ seen a gun go off, was pleased with him.
