Travel sick pup

Recommended Posts

Had this with a few pups, one was so scared of traveling it would bolt for its kennel when taken near the truck, but ALL came to love car journeys. Stop taking the pup in the car for the moment, i used to feed the pups in the boot and build that up to having the engine ticking over whilst feeding and then short journeys with a fun exercise bit after, then gradually build up the distance.....

Iam exactly in the same situation as your self, I have a Five Month Whippet Pup, who is a very bad traveller.

The things I have tried are,

Very short journeys to field where I let him run, this is two mins in car from my house, did this for a fortnight fine, then took him eight miles, four there and back.

Didn't work he was sick on return journey.

then tried Johnson travel-eze, gave tablets as directed, again didn't work.

He does not appear to be very anxious, so it could be motion sickness,

I gave him two Ginger Snaps biscuits thirty Mins before journey,

then a ten mile trip to the Seashore, five there and back, and no sickness, I reilise its early days, there is a local game fair on Saturday 20 miles away, ten either way, so I will try the Snaps again, my Pup gets three raw chicken wings each morning, and I waited four hours before the longer journeys

If I have to got back to the drawing board, there is a product called DAP, which releases Pheromone, which acts as a calming agent, this is the stuff that the Bitch gives out when with Pups, I have had a look at the reviews, and it looks good., Its for anxiety and stress, you can purchase it as a collar which lasts four weeks, enough to get it used to a car, or as a spray which you spray on its car blanket.

Its not cheap, I found a web site with best prices,

Collar was £27.99 now £15.29

Spray was 23.41 now £13.59

Hope this has been a help.

If anyone out there has used DAP products let us know the results.

Ive had a few over the year's that do this just keep taking them out in the car and they will get past the sickness eventually..it might be wise to stick the pup in a dog cage till the sickness stop's just to save you getting vomit all over your car seat's.

I do know they will grow out of it, just been looking for something to quicken the process, I would have to be really desperate to try the Dap, it is too expensive, but up too now I have spent nothing,£1.20 on anti sickness pills and £1 for two pkts ginger snaps farm foods, and I ate the other pkt. :tongue2:

Save your money mate, i have tried the DAP collar and the plug in for cars (air vent thingy) and it didn't work.

Eventually the dog grew out of it but ginger biscuits worked the best at relieving most of it

just keep taking them in the car there not being sick from being scared that is a very rare case its just motion sickness that's all, just keep car well ventilated and get them to lie down if you can. eventually there system adjust and settles down. just repition is the key they get there eventually
