All this talk bout muscles they dont catch you rabbits!

What's the hell do you think they use to run? what a bizarre thing to say!

It isnt really, my dogs are well muscled now,but in a months time when the only excersise they get is running and working, the muscle will not be any were near as defined. So are they fitter now than when there lamping 4 5 nights a week.

If i was going to run a marthon i wouldnt go weight training.Think big muscles are cool becouse of the bull cross.

Any one walking there dogs for 2 hours a day are wasting there time, becouse the dog dosnt need it.

so strengthening muscles isn't an important part of fitness?

Not on about big muscles, on about strengthened, conditioned muscles....saying that's not an important part of fitness/hunting is bizarre in my opinion!

But if a dog is fit it will have strong muscles. All this my dog dos 8mile my dog dos 10 is a load of internet drible.

I took mine on a 10 miles cycle yesterday with 15 minutes of swimming in the river at the end....when we got back I could barely even walk up the stairs and that sod was throwing a ball around the liv

I think we need to remember that ones persons walk is not the same as another's. For some people is may be a 20 minute walk to the local park through streets, dog on a lead. Free running at park then

Does nobody work on here r is it all bullshit 2 hours in the morning 4 to 5 hours on a night if u walked a dog that much it would be f*#@ed not fit stop all trying to out do each other n tell the trut

why exactly? if you take a dog out running alongside a bike you can cover 8 or 10 miles in an hour.......basically you take your dog on a walk for a couple of miles and because other people do something different it must be "internet drible"

Even when I take my dog out just walking I'm walking for up to 2 hours, I don't know exactly how far we go but it must be 6 or 7 miles I would guess. I don't see why you think 8 to 10 miles is so unrealistic!

.Fox hounds dont do as much excercise as some of the lurchers on here.I do a hour on the bike with the dogs some morningsD on some very quite lanes the dog can do there own thing and get a bit of sport. The other day i drove it 3.5miles.Go to a race course with a straight mile track and you will get a shock how far it is.Dont think 8 or 10 miles is unrealistic just not needed.

In answer to your question mine get walked but in places they will get a gallop, and run around on scents.Thats what i want them fit for so thats work they get.You can do all the road work you like it will still fall in a heap after a couple of runs,so once feet and muscles are tight whats the point of doing more.

i run lurchers and race whippets and they are easy to keep fit all this dribble about 10 mile walks and running behind vans is bullshite half hour free running on the beech am and pm good diet and short walks keeps them fit enough to race or hunt

1 hour in the morning and afternoon every single day in all weathers. At weekends they have about 2 hours walk morning and afternoon.

I do fluctuate the methods. Sometimes they follow me behind the truck at a steady 10mph or so, and this would be for 15minutes before or after the walk.

I have never calculated the millage.

What I really don't understand about this thread is the fact that someone asked what other people do to get their dogs fit, people have said what they do, whether it be running alongside bike or long walks or whatever and a couple of people have piped up saying everyone's talking bullshit just because they don't do the same.....what a strange mentality some people have!

Fair enough, taking a dog for a couple of short walks a day probably would get them sort of fit, but you can't tell me a dog that has a couple of half hour walks a day is as fit as one that's run alongside a bit for 10 miles 3 or 4 times a week, or is taken out for 2 hours a day, surely?

I agree with the above

But not this...

Endurance/stamina work is not to build muscles. Your earlier definition of a long distance runner, for training they would need to run long distances.

I would also avoid letting dogs pull on leads when running, why would they need heavily muscled shoulders?

i do road walking mooching through the woods (keep the cat problem in order), walk down the field or chase him around the garden, sounds silly but its not huge so it helpd with his turning and acclerartion got a video on my phone of him doing it quite funny to watch but im not out every day but regardless there is a thousand ways to keep dogs in good health this is what i choose so it varys for me half hour some days and could be 3-4 hours out with the lads walking running as ya do other days

Id say the one that dos the most WORK would be fittest.
