Advice for Newbies

Recommended Posts

You read a lot on this site "I am a newbie what dog should I get" etc etc, my advice before geting a dog would be to find a decent dogman in your area who would not mind you having the odd day/night digging/lamping or whatever youre choice in the hunting game is. To many young lads buy their dogs off any Tom, Dick or Harry, and soon lose interest after a short while. These dogs then end up being passed from kennel to kennel.

I once read a message on this site: Tell Dave, the dog I sold him, and he sold to Jack, who then sold it to Pete, is doing well. This made me cringe! When I started many many years ago, I did my apprenticeship by carrying rabbits whilst lamping, carrying shovels, spades, nets, bars while out digging. I was abut a many a joke, having the piss taken out of.

To many people these days either read from a plummer book or hancock, or who ever. and think they know it all.

All the best for the coming season thats just around the corner.

It's not always easy to fing someone willing to take someone new out, I've been trying and am still trying, if anyone in the north lancs/south cubria area needs someone to carry their shovels, nets or just to pick on please pm me! I'm 25 have my Sgc and used to hand dig trenches at power stations for a living (no machines alowed around those cables!) so I'm not spade shy either ;-) atb ant

very good advise there to any young or new lads to the game. i started out ferreting with my dad and his mates when i was just 6 or 7 years of age and then when i was old enough i wa lamping with them it seems like i spent my youth carrying rabbits but i loved being out hunting. its no wonder why i was crap at school :icon_redface: . We parted ways hunting when i started with terriers as i dont have any interest in anything now appart from digging and my dad being pure old school does nt believe in hunting anything unless its for te pot.
