is it still too soon to pick sloes? it seems most things are earley this year with these sloes looking pretty ripe but I would hate to pick them before they are ready.

also noticed there seems to be far more fruit on the trees compared to the last few years, even the Oaks are full of acorns and the blackberry bushes are heaving with fruit...

cheers all for the replies . would you say that the sloes and most things are earley this year? in the past we've left it until at least October or later but they seem pretty ripe already although still hard. when they're ripe do they soften up?

they won't be nicking my sloes they're in the garden

Everything is early this year. We've got a row of Poplar trees on our daily walk that are losing their leaves already.

We we're on holiday in Scotland in April and i was in shorts all the time.

No Sloes like yours though Jasper. Still small here.

I picked 5 or 6 pounds of sloes this morning in half an hour. They were like grapes on a vine.

If it's a sign that fruit is ripe when it easily twists off the branch then these sloes were very ripe indeed.

If the old country tale that plenty of fruit on the hedgerow is a sign of a hard Winter then this year it looks like we're going back to the ice age. LOL.

The beauty of sloes being ripe now is that there'll be sloe gin ready this side of Christmas.
