Bad feeling

When your raising a pup do you ever get the feeling that it's not going to be up to the job early on? Just it's character, mannerisms and the way it goes about stuff, Some may have a complete turnaround and amaze you but how many have proved your instincts right?

I wouldn't rear a pup from stuff i had no faith in,when rearing one i'm always the optimist and always look forward to getting it out.

IMO "Character and mannerisms" are things the dog does not worry about, these are human attributes.

When you say "how it goes about stuff" do you mean the progress a young dog is showing at tracking, bushing, ratting etc..

Any terrier should progress steadily over the first 12 months if YOU put the time in. Their prey drive should be hard wired.

But at 12 months if it won't work cover, use it's nose and dispatch rats quickly, there is something wrong.

 

Providing you are honest that you gave the dog every chance.

Was it socialised with people, dogs, car travel, farm stock (3-6 months)

How many rats has the young dog seen, and by "seen" I mean it finds in the middle of a 20 Acre field.(6-9 months)

How much cover has the dog had the opportunity to work.(9-12 months)

If you put the effort in, you will know what the dog can DO at each stage, 3,6,9,12 months.

This will build the confidence of man and dog.

 

Its the next 12 months were a working terrier shows what it's made of.

Running through empty earths, listening at digs.(12-15 months)

Getting it's brain to click at what is supposed to happen. (this is different for every dog)

 

And after all this; Does it have the Gameness to stay at the frontline or does it walk.

 

You put the time in with the young dog for over 18 months and your faith can be broken in 10 minutes at a dig.

I have seen young dogs that were not impressive to look at until the time they switched on.

And I have seen dogs that were all balls and aggression and looked the part, then show a yellow streak when they were face to face with quarry.

 

For me the hardest thing to look at and work with in a terrier is a shy or cowering dog,

or a stupid dog is also soul destroying to have around any yard. (No matter how hard the dog is).

 

I would be positive and like busterdog's post be optimistic until proven otherwise.

i once turned down a pup from a mate before he was bred to the last. the trouble was i was pushed for room but realisticly i could have taken him if i was offered his litter brother or sister i would have made room. the truth was the pup i was offered was backward compared to the rest and am not talking about 8 weeks old these were 5 or 6 months old anyway to cut the story short i waS there on the pups first outing and to say he flew would be an understatement. as much as i was happy for my mate i was sick i did nt take the pup i also got some slagging over it. i think if you know the strain and the pedigree behind the pup then its definitly worth taking a chance i know i learned my lesson the hard way i hope it works out for you anyway

Great post and everything but that has just put a right downer on me and my dog im must of been doing something wrong she 12 months in september.dont get me wrong she is game and everything when were out doing a bit of bushing she uses here nose very well but the problem i have with her is that she will go in the bush but is slow if you know what i mean ive seen dogs go in bushes and work em really well! not mine she seems to go through them rather slowley not sure why! also if she chases after a rabbit soon as it enters a bush she will stop not entering the bush unless i manage to catch up with her to egg her on into the bush then she will go but yet again it will be a slow procees!!!! with the ratting she has only ever had the chance with a rat once as some one had it in a trap so i let her have a look at it while it was in the trap and she was going ape at it which was a good sign so i then let it out also good result but i struggle to find rats for her unless i trap em which i thought bit unfair for the rat and then my dog isnt really looking for them but she goes out nearly every day with me for a few hours and she has done this since at least 10 weeks old so i dont know were ive gone wrong and reading your post looks like i got a faulty dog lol anything you have that could possibaly guide me along that can get her on track before its way to late will be very heplfull .

if she s well bred then you ll just have too have faith that it will eventually shine through .we bred a litter one time the bitch pup in it was very slow on the up take she would follow us everywhere no lead nothing while we were digging she sat up and watched had no interest in what was going on she would nt even look at a rat never mind kill it but we knew she had it in her just were nt sure weather it would ever come out we peseverered till a point came that we started too dicuss the right think to do .any way she was 17 months old we agreed too give her another month next day out we were digging her brother she was squeling and barking on end of chain tied too fence post anyway we broke through lifted her brother chained him up let game out of dig bitch was still making noise so i said too mate let her off that chain before i keep her quiet permenent so let her off and started too backfill and tidy up we had all finished up just about too head off mate said were s that bitch i said probably back at van waiting on us but he had a listen back into the earth we just dug and sure enough bumping could be heard gave it a few mins and started down after 3 foot we broke through too bitch tail wagging with a hold of game we could nt believe it mate said its a fluke .over the next week we dug her 5 time s and everything we threw at her she dug it just over three years on she s one of the best bitches we ever owned we dug a son of hers last sunday first time too ground16 months old and have a few of his sisters and brothers ready too start also .so be patient and keep trying as you cant judge a book by its cover and by the way the brother of her that we dug the day she started never made the grade after self entering at 13 months and having 12 digs in his first season so all you can do is keep trying .

If you breed your own lines or off dogs/bitches you have dug to down the years, I would say yes there is certain traits that u'd notice continuing on in certain pups out of a litter. It's knowing what to look out for and even I'f you do believe a certain pup will follow in it's dam and sires footsteps just by it's mannerisms alone doesn't mean you couldn't end up very disappointed. Breeding, knowledge, rearing and patience gives you the best possible chance of getting the most out of any type of dog. IMO
