B.P.R 2,798
What is a lurcher defined as? I've met a few guys Walking their lurchers and when I've asked them what breeding are they, they reply a full lurcher they ain't crossed with anything. Is a lurcher a sighthound crossed with something? Cheers Quote Link to post
Simoman 110
Sighthound and working dog, although almost anything is called a lurcher nowdays.............All this talk of pedigree lurchers makes my piss boil Quote Link to post
Malt 379
It's just idiot people trying to jump on the modern 'fashionable new breeds' bandwagon. The people who are convinced they are a breed obviously know f**k all about exactly what constitutes a dog breed in the first place. Quote Link to post
rob190364 2,594
a couple of months ago I was putting my dog in the back of the car and I noticed a bloke stood next to his van having a brew with a lurcher in the back, I went over and said "nice dog, do you work it?", he said yes he's had it from a rescue centre and he hunts rabbits with it. I asked him if it was a bull cross (which it clearly was) to which he replied, no it's female So I said no, I mean does it have bull terrier in it's breeding and he looked at me as if I'd said can it ride a bike, he replied of course it doesn't, it's a lurcher Edited August 12, 2011 by rob190364 Quote Link to post
Guest dances
Lurcher has to have atleast 25% NON running dog in it I was told but then what would you class anything less as? Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
Lurcher has to have atleast 25% NON running dog in it I was told but then what would you class anything less as? That would imply that a 7/8 greyhound 1/8 collie is not a lurcher which it clearly is. Any sighthound crossed with any herding/terrier type dog Is my interpretation. But similarly a 7/8 terrier 1/8 whippet could be called lurcher and would clearly be a terrier so it's all bollox. Lol. Gaz Quote Link to post
mattyg 1,862
lurcher = bastardised greyhound, whippet or saluki, try telling the insurance its not a lurcher but its a mongrel, they aint having it! Quote Link to post
sighthound123 31
Anything with at least 50 percent sighthound in it. Two different breeds of sighthound crossed is a longdog. I.e saluki/grey, whip/grey and so on. Quote Link to post
boyo 1,398
in my eyes any sighthound crossed with another breed is a lurcher . Quote Link to post
J.DOG 1,355
I got this off a website A Lurcher is not a specific dog breed; it is a type of dog. By definition, a Lurcher is a Sighthound cross, most often part Greyhound. Lurchers that are the result of a cross of two Sighthounds (such as, the popular cross of a Greyhound and Deerhound) are a subgroup of Lurchers called Longdogs. Quote Link to post
borris 12
in my eyes any sighthound crossed with another breed is a lurcher . yes I agree I always thought a lurcher was a sighthound crossed with anything. Quote Link to post

boyo 1,398
we all knoow about the greyhound x collie supposedly the proper lurcher and 2 sighthounds being a longdog or supposed to be but think alout it if we see a non pedigree running dog anywhere show walking out in the feild in fact anywhere at all what do we see and think LURCHER so to me that sums it up a lurcher in my eyes is a non pedigree sighthound crossed with any other breed of dog known to man. and can be dressed up as longdog whirrier rtumbler norfolk or anything else but at the end of the day its all bullshit in my eyes their lurchers full stop . 1 Quote Link to post
Bootsha 1,306
Lurchers are a mix of sighthound and a pastoral breed ( beardie, border or any sort of collie sort), what percentage qualifies i dont know. The amoeliaration of any two sighthounds bred together will result in a "Longdog" being produced. Who exactly worked this out in days gone by I dont know. But theres no mention of bull, wheaton, airedale, Pointer or any other sort of dog often used in the smorgus board of lurcher breeding. In my book, if it has the qualities that you are looking for, and from good working stock, then whats to say it wont work when crossed with a sighthound??. After all, way back when, someone must have had a brain storm to put a collie across his greyhound, who'd have thought that would have caught on eh??? B Quote Link to post
