greyhound/deerhound x greyhound/collie......there are probably quite a few on here , i was wandering if this cross is any good for lamping rabbit and ferreting , are these bigger dogs able to get down low enough to pick up a fleeing rabbit, maybe some pics if possible , happy hunting :drink::yes:

I have seen some superb allrounders bred this way, dogs that killed all British game from rats to fallow. Someone I knew about 30 years ago bred one litter from which I was able to follow the progress of all the pups. They ranged in size from 25-27", two won money in best of three hare matches, all murdered rabbits night and day, killed foxes with ease and I saw one bitch from this litter kill three roe in the space of 20 minutes. The very best of the litter was a 26" bitch which was owned by a very good friend of mine who was jockey at the time. This bitch killed huge numbers of hares and rabbits, quite a lot of fallow and was regulary used with terriers, sadly she was accidentally poisoned when a keeper parked his landy in the yard where my friend worked and she jumped into the back of it and ate some poison bait he was going to illegally lay for foxes.

This is a great cross, i owned a bitch about 12yrs ago, bred out of a 3/4 grey1/4collie to a first cross bitch. She took all quarry but was a belter on the bunnys, she stood 26in and resembled a first cross deerhound/greyhound. And with just an 1/8 collie not too much nowse.

SOUNDS A DECENT CROSS , I HAVE A 1ST CROSS DEERHOUND/GREYHOUND , FINE FOR ME ,HE MAY BE 29'' TO SHOULDER BUT PICKS UP RABBITS AS EASILY AS MY WHIPPET X. THINK ADDING THE COLLIE ECT INTO IT WOULDNT HARM AND MAY BENIFIT , I THINK THIS WOULD BE AN IDEAL CROSS . :victory:

These were mostly matches against pikies, I saw one of them when this bitch beat a 23" saluki-ish smooth red bitch

my mollys sire was a deer/grey x collie/grey... not so hot on the bunnies but pretty good on anything bigger... his best asset was his stamina... damn dog could have run all day :)

These crosses can make some of the best all-rounders, they will take anything, and size, please forget it, In 35 years of keeping running dogs, Ive never seen a dog yet, too big to get down to a rabbit, this is a cake baked by people who for one reason or another havent worked bigger dogs. I must admit my own best dogs have always been around the 23-24 mark, but, Ive had 27 inch crosses that took over 3o rabbits regularly in one night, and pure deerhounds that have had 27, and that also beat lurchers in lamping competitions on rabbits. Its usualy a novice thing to argue about size. I have seen a lot of this breeding over the years, and although I dont as a rule like collie crosses, especially the first cross, but in this cross it does work well. Too much, and the progeny can become too heavy though, now thats a thing that can affect wether or not a dog can get down to rabbits,

Ive seen bitches from this mating down to 24 inches,

DONT open a hornets nest, they are NOT match dogs, they are all-rounders, they will slay hares for the profit hunter, but they wont win matches on the fens
