My New Pup 13 weeks Old

Hello Lads, Just thought i would share a few pictures of my new bitch 'Mouse' she is a (sire) Whippet x (Dam) Beddy Grey, Collie Grey, this makes her 1/2 Whippet 1/4 Grey 1/8th Collie & 1/8th Beddy.

 

Her Dam is owned by MEG of here and sire was owned by his mate, both good workers..

 

She is my first Lurcher and myslef being a complete novice to the game she is a pleasure to own. She retrives a dummy back to hand 90% of the time. A little more work to do just yet but im more than happy so far

 

Other basics including sitting and staying she has mastered, really happy with her progress she seems very switched on, more so than my staff was at her age

 

Hoping to get her out soon to watch some ferreting or for a mooch with other dogs etc.. if any one would be so kind to let me and the pup come along it would be greatly appreciated..

 

My permission holds a good few rabbits so hopefully when shes older she will do me proud and we have many enjoyable nights and days together hunting.

i wouldnt be teaching her much yet, just pet her and keep her calm etc, when shes 5 month start all that take her for rabbits at 6-7 month

Just Rabbits mate, my permission holds fox but we lamp & shoot them with the rifle.

Pics now added, the pic with the ball and my staff in was when she was 7weeks old, the one where she is sitting was taken at 10 weeks and the other two were at 13 weeks.

A very cute wee pup. Should grow into a cracking rabbit dog. Keep up with the basic training & socialising.

Get a copy of "Purdey's Progress" on DVD, has great advice on rearing a lurcher for the first year, i've found it good for a 1st time owner

With reagrds to exercise for my pup i am not keeping her on a lead once we get on the permission she is just free running with my Staff, recall on her is good, i can whistle or call her name and shes right back at my feet. My concern is whilst shes off the lead she is sometimes running full pelt with the other dog. Will this cause problems with joints etc due to the free running?

Free running whilst playing doesnt quite put the same stresses on joints as it does when they are chasing quarry.

Still a good idea not to let her completely exhaust herself when young, use your own judgement about how long and hard she has run and if needs be put her on the lead.

Also be careful she doesn't run into your other dog as a collision at speed can injure quite badly.
