fat man 4,741
Good thread scent, pity there's always someone to spoil it.We were out today and had 2 young dogs and 1 4th season dog for back up.I went to an earth that can be real easy or very awkward. The 1st young bitch,a patterdale was collered up and entered but she showed a few times so we lifted her and tried the 2nd young bitch which is sealyhamxrussellxlakey. She entered and after about 15min we located her at around 7ft,not what we expected,we left her at it for a few more minutes and then started to dig, within 5min of diging she was out and she had been with it as she had some marks on her.We tied her up and let the experienced dog go and 3hour later we opened to hom with 4 in a pocket at a dept of 8ft.The pups did well i thought as that was the 1st earth they ever seen and they both traveled.1 is 17months and the white bitch is 15months,they will both get from now untill xmass to prove there worth. Cleanspade 3,322
to many folk quite on young terriers far to easily. if a young dog isnt doing well in its first season. but is keen. give it another season. a lot of terrierwork is a learning game. as long as they arnt throwing the towel in give em some time. another thing is. to many fok lift a dog to early when trying them. if you have an experienced terrier to fall back on its easy to be impatient with a young en. they need time. it would be good if they were born at the age of four. but they aint. hack 301
in my opinion its very rare you get one that doesnt slip up eg losing one but the one thing i wont have is blantley coming out when they are up to there quarry and refusing to go back in Quote Link to post
doctor dolittle 1
HELLO THERE SCENT, HOPING YOU ARE OK. THE TOPIC WE ARE TALKING ABOUT IS OF COURSE A COMMON SITUATION IN THE TERRIER GAME.KNOW BODY REALLY KNOWS A YOUNG TERRIER EVEN AFTER AFEW OUTINGS. SO MY BEST ADVICE IS AS ALWAYS NEVER NEVER GO TOO HARD ON THEM. THEY ARE ALL DIFFERENT IN THEIR WORKING ABILITIES. YOU SHOULDN'T AT THIS PERIOD OF TIME EVEN CONSIDER PUTTING THE DOG DOWN. ONCE THE YOUNG DOGS SEE AN EXPERIENCED DOG WORKING IT NORMALLY COMES INTO PLAY. IF YOU CAN TAKE THEM TO SMALL PLACES TO WORK AND GET AFEW DIGS UNDER THEIR BELTS SO MUCH THE BETTER. AND THEY WANT REWARDING EVERY TIME, THAT IS SO IMPORTANT.HOWEVER, THROUGH MY OWN EXPERIENCE OF HAVING TERRIERS ALL MY LIFE AND WHAT ALOT OF THE BOYS WILL AGREE WITH IS THAT SOME DOGS NEVER MAKE THE GRADE. OF COURSE IF YOU ARE AFTER TOP QUALITY WORKERS SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO BE RUTHLESS.TO ILLUSTRATE CERTAIN POINTS: MANY YEARS AGO THERE WAS A VERY FAMOUS (TERRIER MAN) AND HE TOLD MY BROTHER AND MYSELF ABOUT HIS DOG, A DOG CALLED TIGER, A BLUE MOTTLED DOG AND A REALLY NICE TYPE OF TERRIER. OUR FRIEND CONTINUED AND CONTINUED TO LET THE DOG ENTER HOLES WHEN FOXES WERE AT HOME KENNELED UP. THE DOG NEVER SHOWED ANY INTEREST WHATSOEVER. SO ON ONE PARTICULAR OCCASION THE TERRIERMAN HAD TRIED AND TRIED, BUT TO NO AVAIL! THE DOG WAS NEARLY 4 YEARS IN AGE BY NOW.HE TRIED ANOTHER PLACE AND THIS TIME HE APPROACHED HIS FRIEND AND SAID: "IF THE DOG DOESN'T WORK TODAY HE IS GOING TO HAVE A LEAD SHOT IN EAR HOLE"!SUDDENLY THE DOGS GREAT OWNER ASKED HIS FRIEND IF HE HAD SLIPPED ONE OF THE OTHER DOGS TO GROUND; BUT THE REPLY BACK AS A NO. HE HAD UNLEASHED TIGER AND HE GONE INTO A SMALL ENTRANCE ,BAYING MERRILY AWAY AT A FOX. THE TERRIER MAN IN QUESTION WAS THE FORMIDABLE (BERT GRIPTON) THE FINEST OF THE FINE. AND READERS, GUESS WHAT HAPPENED? THE TERRIER, TIGER STOPPED WITH BERT UNTIL HE DIED BEING ONE HIS BEST DOGS HE EVER HAD IN HIS KENNELS. ANOTHER STORY GOING BACK OVER 20 YEARS AGO NOW AND IT ALWAYS STICKS IN MY MIND. SOME FRIENDS WERE DIGGING A DEEP HARD SPOT, THE TERRIER BAYING AWAY AND NEVER MOVED ONCE. THE SOIL WAS HARD AND HEAVY GOING UNTIL THEY EVENTUALLY BROKE THROUGH INTO THE DOG, AFTER PULLING THE DOG OUT A FRIEND PEERED RIGHT INTO TUBE AND COULD QUITE CLEARLY SEE A RABBIT THERE UNHARMED. WELL TO BE TRUTHFUL THE GUY DIDN'T KNOW WERE TO PUT HIS FACE AND ADMITTED HE WANTED THE DOG DEAD AND BURIED. HOWEVER TO HIS AMAZEMENT THERE WAS A YOUNG LAD ON THE DIG AND TO SPARE THE TERRIERS LIFE ASKED FOR THE DOG HIMSELF.THE DOG WAS TAKEN HOME, FED WELL,EXERCISED AND WENT EVERYWHERE THE LAD WENT. THE YOUNG LAD TRIED EVERY EARTH OR "SETT" HE KNEW, ONLY FOR THE OTHER GUY TO HEAR IT HAD MADE THE BEST DOG FOR MILES......WHAT I AM SAYING IS THIS; NO ONE REALLY KNOWS THE OBSTACLES UNDERGROUND AND THE DOG SHOULD BE ALWAYS GIVEN AGOOD CHANCE. HOWEVER, YOU CAN'T KEEP TRYING A DOG THAT HASN'T GOT HIS HEART IN THE GAME. WHEREABOUTS IN IRELAND ARE FROM SCENT AS I KNOW MANY OF THE GOOD TERRIER MEN OUT THERE. THE OLD TIMERS SO TO SPEAK. WELL GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE GENUINE LADS ON SITE. AND PLEASE DON'T FORGET ONE THING, WHEN MY GREATEST FRIEND, BERT GRIPTON WAS DYING AND MY TWIN BROTHER AND MYSELF HAD TEARS ROLLING DOWN OUR CHEEKS HE LEFT US WITH ONE WORD. THAT WORD WAS 'KEEP THE FLAG FLYING'...... Quote Link to post
