scent 509
when you start you your terriers off say at the age of 16 to 18 months off and start getting a few digs over them ,if they slip up say loose their quarry or come away how do handle this .Would you cull ,put away for another few months and try again.I know lads that will just cull or even a few idiots that will pass them on but on the other hand i know lads that have put them away for a few months only to get the best from them after a break from digging. What are your opinions on this situation lads? Guest busterdog
Just keep taking them, there are great naturals at all sports but most of us have to learn our trade as we go along, terriers don't learn nothing sat in a dog run. 1 Quote Link to post
scent 509
sound buster im just woundering what most people do because a lot of digging lads live round me and they all have different views on this Quote Link to post
Terrier man 38
Well scent if they Loose their game on that day id give the benifit of the doubt as youl never fully know what happend but when its tried again and if it pulls the same stunt then its going the same way as the dog that walks...culled. If you think at 16mths or what ever age that the terriers ready then once it does it shouldnt keep loosing game as its not keeping the presure it should do on the game and as for a dog walking at this age its either just jacked completly or its loosing its game either way it aint in it and no number of months will change that might do for the one or two digs but the shit will surface to the top in the end... Guest busterdog
I'll accept all manner of mistakes in there first season, the only thing you shouldn't accept is out right cowardice. It's not big or clever to pts young dogs, the thing i find with most that do that shit is it's the ones shouting the loudest that have nothing in there yards "the empty can makes the loudest noise". 7 Quote Link to post
hedz31 1,308
If there young put them away for a couple of months go back to the drawing board if they keep making the same mistakes review the situation ye can tell when a dogs heart is really into it and when its not, every situation is different and its up to the man on the shovel or whos dogs it is to make the decsion a good knowledge of earths is a key factor in entering young animals,i always start young dogs in earths ive known and dug many times i find it alot easier to judge a dogs performance, but if i do feel a dog is an out and out wanker i will cull it 5 Quote Link to post
scent 509
id agree with you terrier man iv often given terriers 4 or 5 chances but i think i knew myself after 2 or 3 chances that it jut wasnt to be .Iv had a few that steamed in for the first 2 or 3 digs but they met their match and didnt want to know after that.
