theferreter 311
Whilst on this cage size, steadyness topic bit,i've just built a extention to my aviary. It was started as a mule flight but without the room for another shed i've knocked it through to make one big aviary, now this could work either way with how flighty my mules end up as at the moment there in cages in my bird room/shed and i'm only in there quickly before work early and for a bit in the evenings so my birds aren't bomb proof shall we say ,now once there out with the other birds and will have dogs and kids runnng about them all day they will i hope steady down a bit better, but then a large flock sort of thing could make it worse maybe . birds!, So here's my mule cage. good set up mate

fireman 10,917
I know me and you don't see exactly eye to eye chunk so don't take this the wrong way, that roof plastic looks a little thin and will it really stand up to the winds you get up there?.The rest of it is good and the only fault i could think of is,does the wind get caught in there?,or what i mean is is it drafty in there and if so the birds will need a draft free corner to roost in.I use artifical xmass tree as roosting cover and it lasts longer than conifer although i do use a bit of that as well, the xmas tree when it get dirty can just be washed off and the last one i got cost me 2 quid for a 7 footer at a car boot.I'd also paint the inside wall a brighter colour and the wire black and both of these things will allow you to see the birds better and use a fluffy roller to paint the wire it's so the easy'est way.Good set up that at the end of the day and it can only get better for your birds.Just thinking about it more you could put up roosting boxes on the walls with perches and cover across the fronts, but as long as the birds can keep out of drafts(a real killer of birds)it shouldn't be to cold for them.Just keep an eye on them and if they look fluffed and are struggling with the cold then bring them back in. fireman 10,917
Defo paint it black, look at my pics and it looks like i have no wire in places where i've painted it black and like i say use a fluffy roller(look at the panels on the floor in the new bit,one is painted the other isn't and can you see the difference?).One thing others might say is having wild bird feeders by your avairy is that the wild birds will hang onto your wire and could spread disease to them,i'd just move them away a little bit as your birds will pull in wild ones to the feeders, just to be safe sort of thing. fireman 10,917
Looks loads better with black wire doesn't it?,good do that and seeing as you asked, the only little things i would do different is add a bit more cover so the birds can tuck right in if they want to and the water bottle is a little small for that many birds. On one of my pics there is a irish fancy canary on a hanging feeder and i have a water drinker made by the same firm and it is well worth the 6 quid i think i paid for it and gives a few birds room to drink at the same time,i'd also add a bird bath in there as they need to clean themselves and i just use a ornate concrete one. top poacher 42
i have one on the floor inside,i also have a double bird bath hanging inside on mesh,if u look closly in middle window ov green mesh u can just say see it at bottom,,,,,,,,and yes it looks better wi black mesh,,,cheers
