Deer with running dogs and sheep problems after?

if yer dogs dont know diffrence between a deer an a sheep, they are hardly deer dogs, are they????

 

if yer dogs course deer week in week out and on the odd accasion fancies a lamb dinner does this not make them a deer dog? if so then shorely a dog that runs rabbits day in day out and also likes too play shake with a ferret is it not a rabbiting dog?

most dogs used on deer regular, will know the differnce from sheep. But i would say that dog or dogs need to be taken to see sheep quite few times a week, just to keep on top of it with its training.I saw it once with deer dog, that was good with sheep . It was in the mid 80s we were mooching about by a wood, the flock were top of the field , one of the dogs knocked a fox out of cover it went right in wood, fox went right in with dog behind it but lost it. The next thing a feckin sheep came out with the dog behind it, feck knows why it was there.!!. My mate shouted at the dog, and it stopped thank feck, he give it a wack with the lead . We walked few more fields with sheep there and the dog was ok no prob, but i wonder if he we hadnt have been there if the dog would have stopped..i dont think that you (can) trust any dog 100% with sheep, thats why i think you need to keep on the sheep training regular.

A long time ago, i use to take deer with lurchers. But from experience, found they also went for sheep after, even though they were stock broken from before they took deer.!

Whats other peoples experiences on this in the passed?

I am sure not all dogs would go for sheep after, just mine did and it was the devils own job to break them off it again!!

I dont hunt deer with dogs these days, just rabbit ect, but back then, took a lot of fallow!!!!!

What dog did you have back then mate ?

 

A whippet x greyhound, 23'' and a 3/4 greyhound x 1/4 irish terrier 27''. They both took fallow single handed, mainly prickets (year old bucks) and does.

The Irish terrier x, was not so bad on the sheep after, did not take as long to remind him that sheep were a no no, but the whippet x greyhound was a pain after he started taking deer. Good point about the mountain sheep, these sheep smell like deer at times and are VERY tempting to a dog!!

correct you dont finish training your dog to sheep until the day the dog dies , but must say the dog couldnt have wanted the sheep that bad if he could call it off either that or hes got the dog well trained, dont think id fancy having a lurcher i could call off something

yes he was well trained mate, it was game dog what ever it grabbed went no where, as i said it did as it was told,( plus we were there) , its if you are out of sight that it may go wrong (and thats when it will) thats what i was getting at .
