I,v run and bred whippets for thirty years I own other x,s as well but I,ll always have a whippet in my team . I,v had good ones and not so good ones but never one that was good for nothing. The best I,v ever had made me smile every day she regularly caught 3 and 4 on the fens and silenced a few saluki x lads.Dont get me wrong I own saluki x dogs from good lines but this Whippet was a top dog and I will probably never see another like her every one that saw her run and there were many complimented on the way she ran .Her best day was 6 out of 7 and in that same year she caught just under 300 single handed and over 200 the next year it was a sad day when she died .I have 4 pups from her lines here at the moment and I,m keeping them all just incase there is one made of the same stuff ,I live in hope but I dont think any one would be lucky enough to have 2 like her in one liftime,I,ll post on their progress in 10 months time if any turn out like her .Any one that slags Whippets has not worked one to its strengths they are very game and are able to perform well above themselves.

Good post mate.

Wow, as soon as a bull x is mentioned the thread is soon to be hijacked by dances and others arguing, my dogs better than yours, mines bred better, here's a picture to prove it.

Ok mate. I'm so sorry for giving my opinion as a reply to dances. Sorry again I really am

Dont want an argument, your right. I don't know

Much, i got a pup which cost me a lot and I'm giving the game a go. My dicks bigger than yours anyway

Why in the world would there ever be a whippet vs bull x argument. Totally different dogs, for different jobs (although the foxing folk do get a bit upset when they realize that the humble whippet is capable of killing a redcoat). Folk like Dances are just morons. A f*****g kid, who jumps on the bandwagon, with f**k all knowledge of what he talks about most of the time. A laughing stock. Same old same old.

to me a whippet is a fun dog but not a serous contender for all round work in all sorts of ground hence you strive to breed good qaulity lurchers ,i cant see the piont of a whippet for hunting localy in allsorts of weather to short on leg not got the bone feet or weight ,or coat ,yet to see a pure whippet out perform any well bre d lurcher sme like the gres nice dogs but there feet take a hammering and condition on big nites had one liked her got good pups out of her grew ,but wouldnt have another uneles for racing ,

On here mate, whippets are no good for anything, they get slated for beign to skinny an soft, they hate cold nights and shiver to much and can't take any other quarry than rabbit..

Don't take it to heart...

Whippets - as above

Bull x - thick, slow, turn like a oil tanker, owned by chavs, have feet like ducks

Collie x - too clever, pick their runs, jackers

Beddy x - no good yappers all bred from non working terriers

Saluki & their crosses - slow, plodding, untrainable, don't do recall, thick

Greyhounds/grews - no stamina, too fast, bad feet, can't stop

..anybody see a pattern? :hmm::laugh:

The only cross you hardly hear anyone slag off on here is the deerhound cross.. :hmm:

Such is the way with working dogs. People like what they like & everything else is shit!

Hi to all, so I've never owned a whippet before and have encountered an irritating habit that got worse in the last month of ferreting and was wondering if anyone out there has had success minimising noise during ferreting?
So he runs prey silently, almost never barks at home so I was very happy going into his first winter, but.... when the ferret slot machine is not paying out fast enough for his liking he yips at the holes he senses are near the underground action. On top of that, if he runs a bolted rabbit to ground again he persistently barks at the hole while constantly looking at me as if to say "get them ferrets over here mate, I've got one for you"
I've a very experienced collie lurcher who is a dream to ferret with but the whippet seems to make no reference to the good stuff he does. Any ideas on managing this?

My mate who i do a bit of ratting with is looking for a Whippet or Whippety Lurcher pup.
Idealy he's looking for a small, fast dog that is tough enough to rat alongside terriers, ferret and lamp with.
A full whippet would be great but one with plenty of poke and will get stuck in to the rough and tumble of ditch side ratting days on freezing open land.
There's no rush but if anyone can point him in the right direction that would be welcome.
      Thanks.

I’m looking for some advice as we recently rescued a whippet lurcher mix. She’s extremely friendly and sociable with dogs and people but is constantly biting and grabbing our older dogs legs, ears and neck. He’s s cavachon and doesn’t really care for playing or interacting with other dogs so he rarely snaps or growls at her when she starts. He’ll just stand there looking at us or try to run away. She’s never been aggressive towards him and regularly try’s to protect him if other dogs get rough with him. However she’s constantly biting at him when he starts barking or when’s she too excited. We separate her and tell her no but so far it’s not working and he’s doing little to tell her to stop. My worry is he’s much smaller then her and that she might accidentally hurt him if we weren’t there to stop it. Is this common Lurcher behaviour and any suggestions? Thanks
