Run_Rabbit85 8
best way as a young pup im talking about 8 weeks or so when you first get it have them feeding, drinking out the same bowl thats his how i was told as a wee nipper but the older the dog the harder it is especially if its already seen abit or been sort of trained ie with a rabbit skin dummie or what not. if it is a wee bit older than i would be keeping it on a lead as it could turn out not as planned and you will be a ferret down and possibly feck the whole dog/ferret bonding process up entirely hope this helps Quote Link to post

Jamie m 668
Take the dog in the garden tie it up get out the stinkers let him see you holding them, and when correcting the dog be firm but not angry , gradually get closer to the dog with a ferret also if he gets to excited put the ferret in the cage then go and calm the dog let him smell your hands to get used to the scent , to begin with slow and steady for a week , I have found from my own experience as I'm braking an older dog to ferrets you also have the jealousy factor almost as though the dog is upset that your fussing over a ferret and not it . I am at the stage where the dog is fine with the ferrets in hand or in the box he just looks away but as soon as they hit the floor his eyes light up , just got to crack that bit now , slow and steady mate it's not going to happen over night gradually get closer to the dog with the ferret correcting and calming the dog then eventually you will be able to do this with the dog off the lead , then you will be half way there , keep it up repetition but not to much when the dogs had enough, once you've cracked this stage take your dog for a massive walk and when he's lying down in the garden whacked out get someone to help get the stinkers out and let them all on the floor making sure you can quickly control the dog if needs be , I found taking him ferreting on the leed good he knows ferrets are off limits and as soon as bunnys started bolting he didn't bat an eye lid at a ferret , but as soon as the rabbits dryed up he started whyning at the stinkers running round grrrrrrrr , a long road mate but hay ho good look , this is just my own experience and I'm in no way an old hand and do not claim to be any sort of expert cheers j Edited August 6, 2011 by Jamie m Quote Link to post
mally 832
I start to break pups to ferrets at just 5 weeks old before they go to there new homes. There bomb proof with ferrets when they leave here. The younger you introduce them the better and easier it will be. I always use a shallow dish of goats milk and a trusted ferret hob i got off gnipper on this site. 1 Quote Link to post

MikeTheDog 153
I've always had ferrets and lurcher's getting on with each other because they get the opportunity to bond as pups, I don't envy you guys introducing an older dog to ferrets.. It's great to see them playing and working as a team! Quote Link to post
