DO GREYHOUNDS MAKE DECENT WORKERS.?

There used to be plenty of working greyhounds a few years back before the saluki crosses came in for the coursing and some were fairly reasonable 2 out of 2 and the odd one that could do a bit more been out with a few that could lamp too the stamina aint the same as a lurcher and the feet seem to suffer if worked hard. but no worse than a lot of threequaterbred dogs ive seen. For a pot filler brought up from a pup they can do the job no probs and before the ban a greyhound that knew the game with hares was a pleasure to watch i wouldnt advise anyone getting an ex track or coursing dog unless your sure theyve been stock broke as they tend to like the sheep a bit and anything else that moves for that matter

Iv had a few ex- trackers in the past.

The best i have had was a black bitch, 25'' TTS and very fast, great on hare, plenty of stamina, but, unfortunately, got killed coursing one on rough ground, roled into a high bank and broke her neck, she was going flat out at the time. :icon_eek:

As said before, they usually, go for,EVERYTHING.;)

quote-scottish lurcher.

and on rough ground found them to be crap sure heeps of you greyhound owners might disagree but keep greyhounds for the track and keep lurchers for hunting i would bet most lurcher owners would bet money on there lurchers catching more hares than a greyhound ive have seen my two run faster than any racing greyhound not bigging them up

Agree and disagree mate,I agree that greyhounds should be kept for the track, now that coursing is banned[unless they have been reared and trained for lurcherwork from puppyhood].As far as your lurchers

being faster than any racing greyhound ,i'll have to disagree, then again maybe the greyhounds you've seen haven't been up to much.

One of the local clowns who just happener to own lurchers put it about a few years ago that his lurcher was faster than any greyhound. The good thing was he was even willing to bet on the outcome, anyway the stakes were £200 a side, his lurcher against my greyhound bitch over 300 yards at the football pitches behind a drag.

Easiest £200 I ever made, there was more than 50 yards between them at the finnish :D

i said greyhounds only good over a short distance if you read my post mate. thats only 300 yards could she match it on rough ground over a longer distance chasing real game that twisting and turning? chase lures is all very well but different chasing real thing ask some of the real lurcher men? aint dissing greyhounds just think you can beat a well school lurcher if you read my post you will see thats what i said mate. real game dont run on a flat football pitch think your getting on your high horse mate take that greyhound hound and put in on real game on rough ground against a lurcher and see if you win

Aint got no high horse mate, like I said in pm I think we have the same veiws.

sorry didnt make my self clear mate on earlyer post but your right think we have the same views and i belive all hun dogs should be admired guess thats why we breed lurchers so we can get good points from both dogs and hopefuly we can produce a great hunting dog that works well for us

to be honest i think getting a strait grayhound is a no go thay have the speed but thay cant turn i have been out with one many times and seen rabbits turn it to death..

whippets are very good rabbiting dogs but i would try and get my hands on one over the 20" mark.. people say beddie x whippets are good too but same again go for a bigger breed

my next puppy will either be a first cross grayhound x whippet or a saluki x whippet thay have the speed and can turn too... you need to give that puppy a chance you dont realize what you have mate.. your pup should make a dam good dog just give it time:)

If your just after a dog for rabbits i don't think you can go wrong with a good whippet. Here's my little meat axe. He's nice and solidly built and doesn't have any problems with his feet or legs. He's 20 inches and 9 months old.
