I SUPOSE IT DEPENDS ON THE TEMPREMENT OF THE GREYHOUND

BACK IN THE 80S I HAD A BITCH THAT RACED ON THE TRACK

BUT IT ALSO CAUGHT DAYTIME HARES LAMPED RABBITS/DEER

JUST WASNT THAT BOTHERED ABOUT FOXES ON HER OWN

SHE WOULD CATCH AND KILL THEM WITH ANOTHER DOG

BUT HAS I SAY DEPENDS ON THE DOG/BITCH THIS ONE WAS

REARED BY ME FROM BEING 8 WEEK OLD

PERHAPS IF YOU GET ONE OLDER FROM THE TRACK MIGHT BE DIFFERENT

;):victory:

this is my grayhound. she is a great dog she will do any think i ask. and loves being out in the field. she has done me proud.

no probs mate, had pup at 4 months old,so dont know what happened to him when he was younger, cant ask last owner as hes with the angels ,r.i.p. tom,he`ll fetch in the garden ' is mad keen if he see`s arabbit, but if he sees/hears sheep he goes totally skitts,im no small fry @ i struggle to hold him.

no offence fcuk greyhounds they only no how to turn left u can chase game but nothing beat a well schooled lurcher greyhound only good over short distance racing greyhound run 550 meters and they use big dogs for that pre ban you chase hare the chase has just started and it at 550 meters and on rough ground found them to be crap sure heeps of you greyhound owners might disagree but keep greyhounds for the track and keep lurchers for hunting i would bet most lurcher owners would bet money on there lurchers catching more hares than a greyhound ive have seen my two run faster than any racing greyhound not bigging them up

Agree and disagree mate,I agree that greyhounds should be kept for the track, now that coursing is banned[unless they have been reared and trained for lurcherwork from puppyhood].As far as your lurchers

being faster than any racing greyhound ,i'll have to disagree, then again maybe the greyhounds you've seen haven't been up to much.

One of the local clowns who just happener to own lurchers put it about a few years ago that his lurcher was faster than any greyhound. The good thing was he was even willing to bet on the outcome, anyway the stakes were £200 a side, his lurcher against my greyhound bitch over 300 yards at the football pitches behind a drag.

Easiest £200 I ever made, there was more than 50 yards between them at the finnish :D

It sounds to me like your a quiter. You should give your Greyw a chance first instead of pushing it aside for the kids to play with. If I was a lurcher I know where Id rather be out in the field where they belong. Not playing with some kids.

You should of come on here asking tips of how to break a pup to stock. I'm sure someone would help.

From what Iv'e heared Greyw's are amazing beasts.

Jus give the pup a go mate. :thumbs-up:

Sorry didn't realise you'd already posted on livestock

But that was only in the last day or two you should give the greyw a chance IMHO it takes time and paitience to train a dog. :thumbs-up:

never been a quitter,go out everyday trying him with @ around sheep, tried everything from halti`s to choke chains being nice to being heavy handed, nothing so far has worked had him 2 months now,as i said in other post i wont give in,i cant fault him in any other area,he`s perfect, but the slightest wiff of sheep, his brain switches to mental case, :icon_eek: i might be new on here but ive had dogs for years about 30 now, just never had a dog like this before,im wondering whether he originally came from a farm @ had a bad experience with one as a young pup,as said before cant find out previous owner dead.

What you want to do is get some permision and when your about to take him out give the farmer a buzz ask him where his sheep are and if their is anywhere you can work the dog where he wont come accross any. My mate has a half cross bull that was never broken to stock and is two now so can't be worked around sheep he has to ring his permision everytime he wants to go out.

Bear in mind he's still 6 months give the pup a chance he might settle down as he gets older.

Have you slung him in a pen with a ram yet?? Thats what Id do as a last resort he'l soon stop going for them.

Best of luck with him mate I bet if you put the effort in he'l make a excellent dog. :victory::drinks:

Lamper/gatherer i'm not surprised your getting a bit of grief, you say that you've had dogs

for 30 years but this is your first pup,why is that?

You can't beat rearing and training your own pup the satisfaction is great,of course when it

all goes wrong you've nobody to blame but yourself.

Mate i'll give you some advice,if you want to race dogs buy a greyhound.

If you want to catch rabbits buy a lurcher pup.

I've yet to see a greyhound that can work better than a lurcher or a lurcher that

can run faster than a greyhound.

So mate straighten your head out,get rid of that stupid idea of getting a greyhound and put some serious work into your grew pup.

i said greyhounds only good over a short distance if you read my post mate. thats only 300 yards could she match it on rough ground over a longer distance chasing real game that twisting and turning? chase lures is all very well but different chasing real thing ask some of the real lurcher men? aint dissing greyhounds just think you can beat a well school lurcher if you read my post you will see thats what i said mate. real game dont run on a flat football pitch think your getting on your high horse mate take that greyhound hound and put in on real game on rough ground against a lurcher and see if you win Edited by scottish lurcher
