DogMagic 461
Golf course rabbits are fast as and they stop for nothing! They know exactly where home is and they go for it flat out! You need a dog thats fast enough to cut in front of them and turn them back out onto the green. THEN the dogs got half a chance. What i think wilf meant is that if your using a young inexperienced dog you need to pick your runs. If you see a rabbit thats only 10 yards from cover dont bother slipping cos he will just learn that rabbits cant be caught. You want a nice dark, windy night. Preferably with a bit of light rain and walk into the wind so they cant smell you coming. Your first few trips out you will be learning where there main areas are and which way they run when disturbed. Once you know this you can get in between them and their warrens and stand half a chance. Yes a fast dog is important but a lurcher IS a fast dog. In my opinion a CLEVER dog that HAS speed is better. My collie greyhound does well on my local golf course because he has learned where the rabbits are going to run and gets there first to head them off. It doesnt matter what x you have. Put all your time and effort into that dog and persevere, dont give up on him. He will click eventually. Yes sometimes its frustrating when a dog fucks it up but thats part and parcel. If you dont have confidence in your dog you might as well take up golf instead. He will sense your lack of confidence in him and wont perform as well as he could do. You will never buy a good dog, people dont sell them. They take to much time and effort to make them into good dogs in the first place. All you will do by buying a dog will be buying one that someone else has already given up to early on. Take the dog youve got, switch the lamp on, find the rabbits, get between them and the nearest cover, walk in till they start to run, slip the dog and enjoy. And remember for next time where they were and where they ran! 3 Quote Link to post

Cannyboy 34
Best dogs I've seen on golf course have been whippets or at least 3/4 whippet or 3/4greyhound and normally under 24 inches, seen pure greyhounds made to look silly on the short grass, seems to be ideal for the rabbits to twist and turn and there never normally more than 50 yards from cover. moonlighter 1,164
Surely your not getting a dog for one golf course?? How many times do you think you will be lamping it before there lamp shy. I lamp a golf course but the dogs stay at home that night. The first time your dog turns on the green, by by permission. When I go with the rim fire I can get 20/30 rabbits a night. My dogs would be lucky to get 5. Quote Link to post

DogMagic 461
RP what dog do you already have mate? How old? Whats it doing so far? A whippet x greyhound is a good thing. I would be tempted to look for something with a bit of collie in there too as it adds brains. Quote Link to post
