lurcher330 2,297
Does the metal the bar is made out of make a difference,ie; steel ,iron,Alloy ? What would the ideal length be,does it make a difference ? Two piece or One does it matter other than conveinence for carrying ? IMO a 4 foot stainless steel bar is the best half the weight of normal steel and twice as strong and alloy would'nt be worth a wxnk, not strong enough Quote Link to post
doctor dolittle 1
THE BLEEPER BOX HAS MADE SUCH A DIFFERENCE TO THE WORKING TERRIER SCENE AND THE FERRETING GAME ALSO. HOWEVER, LIKE ALOT OF MEMBERS HAVE ALREADY STATED ALL TYPES OF TECHNOLOGY CAN BRING ITS UNFORTUNATE PROBLEMS. 'THEN WHAT ABOUT THE DAYS BEFORE LOCATORS WHERE DISCOVERED, INVENTED ETC? FOR THE TERRIER LADS WHO WORKED THEIR DOGS BEFORE BLEEPERS WHERE AVAILABLE THEN THEY SHOULD HAVE SOME IDEA IN HOW TO LOCATE A DOG.HOWEVER, I HAVE SEEN SOME PEOPLE JUST NATURALS AT FINDING THEIR DOGS AND OTHER PEOPLE WHO DIDN'T HAVE A CLUE! SOME OF THE MOST DIFFICULT PLACES I HAVE HAD TO CONTEND WITH HAVE BEEN THE LARGE SAND EARTHS IN THIS PART OF THE WORLD.OF COURSE IT IS ALOT EASIER AND COMMON SENSE IF YOU HAVE A GOOD BAYING DOG TO HAVING A MUTE DOG, WHICH I WOULDN'T TOUCH WITH A BARGE POLE. I HAVE KNOWN TERRIERMEN WHO WOULD BE MORTIFIED TO ENTER ANY DOG INTO A HOLE WITHOUT A COLLAR ON. BUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THINGS GO WRONG? WHAT ABOUT PLACES WHERE IT WOULDN'T BE ADVISABLE TO EVEN ENTER A TERRIER NEVER MIND PUT A COLLAR ON A DOG? I USE COLLARS ON MOST OCCASIONS, BUT HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU JUST BEEN EXERCISING A DOG AND HE HAS FOUND A FOX IN A HOLE?.I SAW A FRIEND WHO COULD LOCATE MOST DOGS JUST BY USING A BAR, BUT THEN AGAIN IT IS DIFFERENT IN DEEPER EARTHS OR HOLES.... MANY YEARS AGO A RUSSELL TYPE BITCH I BRED RAN INTO A MASSIVE PLACE, AND IN MY OPINION IT WOULD HAVE BEEN MADNESS TO EVEN CONSIDER PUTTING A LOCATING COLLAR ON ANY TERRIER. THE TERRIER WAS AN INCREDIBLE FINDER BUT WHEN SHE ENTERED THAT PLACE THAT DAY SHE DID RUN INTO SOME KIND OF TROUBLE.ALOT OF FOXES HAD BEEN BOLTED BY MY BROTHER AND MYSELF ON MANY OCCASIONS; AND IT WAS A FAVORITE PLACE FOR FOXES AND FERAL CATS ALSO.THE PLACE IN QUESTION TURNED INTO A GARGANTUAN RESCUE AND WE GOT THE BITCH OUT AFTER ELEVEN DAYS. IT TOOK THE DOG AFEW DAYS TO RECOVER BUT I DON'T THINK SHE WOULD HAVE SURVIVED WITH A COLLAR FITTED AROUND HER NECK. THE LOCATOR WOULD HAVE BEEN OF NO USE ANYWAY. HOWEVER, THE LOCATORS HAVE BEEN AN INCREDIBLE INVENTION AND TO PUT IT SIMPLY HAS SAVED SO MANY TERRIERS LIFES ALSO. ALL I'M SAYING IS, IS THAT THINGS CAN AND DO GO WRONG IN LIFE AND IT PAYS TO HAVE SOME KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE IN FINDING ADOG BELOW GROUND. JUST DON'T RELY ON THE BLEEPER ALL THE TIME. WITH FERRETS IT CAN AND IS DIFFERENT FROM TIME TO TIME.GOOD LUCK! DOCTOR DOLITTLE. Quote Link to post
Waz 4,252
Some good posts re finding dogs without modern technology. Do you think the dogs see more work due to technology? Some mention of problem after certain depths etc. What sort of depths were the men of old digging? This type of thread has been done a few times before (& just recently), makes for good reading, and in my opinion some knowledgeable info has been posted, anyone able to find the threads? scent 509
its happened to me on numerous occassions that iv had to locate one of the terriers without a locator.Thankfully it was never that deep.Just stick your ear to the ground listen for bumps and barking.Find where it is loudest and if you have a bar sink it and have another listen ,fingers crossed you will be on top of the dog and start digging Quote Link to post

Guest busterdog
Totaly agree with the stainless bar, i used one for years and it always bounced back into shape, everything else bent like a banana. I used to walk miles with mine and although it was a chore to carry it was a damned site lighter than the steel bars you can buy commercially. Quote Link to post

donnyc 1,203
Its a nack some have, seen someone walk up to a place and say ( youl dig it here) he is rarely wrong ..Done it before the locaters..Youngsters need to drop the dog and try and locate it before switching on the box practice for the day the collar or box gives up 1 Quote Link to post
alan c 0
the reason u check the locator and box before u enter the dog is so that it doesent go tits up box or collar could fail at anytime though how would you no if you aint done much digging because unlike you i aint stupid and know you can never rely on something that is electrical and is powered by batteries i dont know why someone who doesnt dig much can say they can pinpoint dogs to ground the stupid comment has come from you chid Quote Link to post
