dixiebop 125
How many of us could pin the position of a dog to ground with great accuracy if the collar went Tits Up ! ? Has this art been lost to the younger generation, due to the use of the collars and their accuracy, better Technology at hand ? I know I would struggle, without the help of my Ol ' Friend, I'm in no way advocating putting a dog to ground without one, I still use the old grey knocker box with a degree of success, but If it failed would I ? or the countless like me ? Chid 6,509
i aint done much digging .. but know how to find a dog to ground with no locator ... people should practise finding the dog without a locator just incase the collar or box fails ... Quote Link to post

fat man 4,741
the reason u check the locator and box before u enter the dog is so that it doesent go tits up Box or collar can f**k up when the dog is in the ground through no ones fault.I have had collars bitten through and stop working.I once had a terrier to ground ride up beside a sub station and could get no signal at all, just constant tearing on the locator.I dug for many years without locator, would not dream of it now but would still like to think if it failed i could get to the terrier. 1 Quote Link to post
dixiebop 125
Do a bit of permission that has Pylons running along and over earths, the batterys in the collars always fail round there, and usually have to change after being there? box never seems to work right either Quote Link to post
wirral countryman 2,110
I would say most people over 50yrs of age on here have dug to terrier's without a locator at some time or another and it can be a nightmare especially on a steep bank, etc, shallow earths are easy enough but really its just educated guesswork, listening to the ground and putting in sticks to listen at was a nightmare and not something I would like to go back to,I once had a lurcher that could give a good mark as to the whereabouts of the terrier and was usually spot on but they don't come along often,I tend to follow the dog as soon as it enters with my knocker box to try and get an idea as to whats happening below,I am very quiet round any earth and always hope for an easy bolt but in the event of having to dig at least I have an idea right away where the action is,locators made terrierwork a lot safer for the dogs and we owe it to them to keep our equipment in top condition at all times,I think they deserve it for what they do,atb, wirralman 1 Quote Link to post
snizle06 202
the reason u check the locator and box before u enter the dog is so that it doesent go tits up last season i did all the pre dig checks, batterys full bellman&flint working etc put dog in and after about 5 mins the finder went beserk. couldnt find dog for about an hour and this earth was about 4 foot deep didnt help that dog was completely mute. i say i could find sounders without a finder but its very difficult to locate hard dogs. when we broke through to dog he was beside a rock and had broken the internals of the collar by shaking against the rock.
