Casso 1,261
I like a dog to be fit to start, no extra weight. Extra weight means extra wear and tear and it means the dog is not really fit enough leading to other probs. Start them fit then adjust the food intake accordingly, if the dog looses weight, up the feed. Mine are on much more food once the season properly kicks in not having a go at ya here Moll, i dont know what you do with yer dogs or how hard you work them but,,a lean dog facing into 2,3 or 4 nights hard lamping is going to really struggle by the end , 20 /30 bunnies a night in a good area ,we use to go away a couple of times a year and hunt night and day, , there is not enough time for the dog to replace the weight back that he burns every night , you can stuff as many calories into him after the end of each night but by the end of the week he's not going to look in good condition , hes going to look poor, because he body is working so hard to replace itself even at rest,, a fit mutt can carry a few pounds no problem and not have it effect his running in the least, i pay no heed to his weight as long as i can see he has a bit in hand, ,2 fighters cut down to a certain weight for the weigh in ,but its not the weight they do battle at,, Quote Link to post
Moll. 1,770
I never said lean Casso, i said fit. It was in reply to people saying they liked extra weight on their dogs for work A dog with extra weight at the beginning will still be in the same position 3/4 weeks into the season as a dog starting out fit, except it will have had a greater chance of injury during that time. I don't go out 4 times per week day and night for 30 rabbits each time, i have no need to. I do however go out 5 + nights per week, for lesser numbers and other prey then usually 1 night per week for up to 30 rabbits, with a bit of daytime bushing here and there. Then the lurchers also spent up to 6hrs solid ratting once per fortnight. In my experience a well fed, and well maintained (exercise wise) dog will maintain most of it's condition throughout the season. If it is not then i personally would look at the diet/fitness and levels of work for that particular dog. They are not machines. Quote Link to post
