Pet ferrets used for working

Recommended Posts

Theres working and then theres working! Not all ferrets graft to the standard expected. And if anyone says different they either havnt seen many ferrets work and been a bit lucky or have low standards. The difference between a pet ferret and a 100% working ferret is that a pet will still be kept even if its found lacking, a ferret kept 100% for work that is shite wont be tollerated and certainly WONT be bred from 'because its cute'!

How many times have you picked a ferret up after having bolted a few rabbits and doubted whether the ferret was lying to you about there being no more at home, refusing to re enter for any length of time? Enter a seasoned warrior and watch that remaining stubborn buck fly out like his arse is on fire! How many people have had a ferret surface after 5....10 mins of being at a stop end on one bottled up and said "shes/hes killed it"? Dig down, even if its 5 foot, as I have and find a rabbit with a few scratches on its arse but still very much alive! Or drop another ferret in and get a bolt!

A worker should be just as tame and easy to handle as a pet! More so infact as often they have to be handled when fired up and grabbed in haste with no fear of getting bitten. Many times I have tossed my ferret a short distance to my ferreting partner and it doesnt phase them at all!

Stop kidding yourselves people and be honest about the standard of your ferrets. Far too many people think they have a decent ferret that is worth breeding from just because it has bolted a few rabbits and doesnt try to savage your hand!
