spring pole

Recommended Posts

Iv just came across some pictures of pits training on spring poles, would it be posible to get a lurcher fit useing one if the dog was game enough? Would it be worth while? And would it cause any problems such as makeing them heavy mouthed? I was thinking it might be ideal for say a bull x thats just used on fox. What are your thoughts?

I do a variation of that. Both my dogs love it, (especially the pat)

I got a big picture hook and screwed it into a door frame. Then I used one of those elastic things used for roof racks etc (with a hook on either end) and hook it up to the frame, some rope with a rag on it and tie that to the elastic thing. Mine isnt high enough for his body to come of the ground, its his head height so he can pull and tug on it all day if he wants but its dodgy walking past when he is doing it incase he lets go! :black eye:. He defently enjoys it and keeps him occupide for hours, and will also exersise him, not to the extent of the pits but still..

My beddy cross also likes it, not to the same extent but will still use it.

a spring pole is fun for the dog but doesnt do a great deal for fitness...its all good fun for the dog and he wont do any harm if used sensibly...but dont rely on it getting a dog fit..

Bang on there gnash, excellent for jaw power and building good neck and shoulder muscles, but for stamina and fittness, the flirt pole is the game, if you can get a young lurcher pup into it, hell be fit as feck.

A flirt pole would be fun but there are much better methods of getting a dog fit. I read about a famous bitch falling from a spring pole and breaking her back a few years ago.

They shouldnt be able to 'fall' as there back legs shouldnt be off the ground?

The legs don't have to be off the ground, the dog can be on its back legs and still fall backwards. If you have seen a bull working a pole then they often jump around pulling at it..................

Flirt pole is brilliant for keeping dogs fit what I use is a 8ft Bamboo with a 4Ft piece of very strong string with a fox tail tied to it. They go mad for it and for us who dont have the time for 2 hr walks every day I have 5 terriers very wrecked in 15mins. For dogs that havnt been worked this way before start with 2 or 3 mins and work your way up.
