Dogs prey drive

Right my bull cross has a massive prey drive, what ever he is chasing no matter how big or small, the problem I'm having is he will literally go through anything to catch what he Is Persuing and sometimes dissapears for 20 mins half hour, and il call him and whistle throughout this time and il give up an carry on walking an the dog will randomly appear, exhausted and it's really doing my head in any advice in how to get his attention to come back

My first bit of advice is dont let him off the lead at the moment, the problem is the recall plain and simple, you dont have one, drive etc is irrelavent, if he doesn't come back when whistled/asked then no recall. I used to deal with difficult dogs with no/poor recall and had a method that worked well, too long winded here but involves a secure area such as a tennis court, well fenced paddock etc, pm me if you like........

Agreed...prey drive and recall are 2 separate issues....got a bitch here with exceptional drive but her recall is usually spot on....sometimes refuses to come straight back though if she,s really close to her quarry when out of the beam.....which also sometimes contributes to the quarry being caught out of the beam...so its a little foible i can put up with..atb stabba

I mean he comes back when were walking, or just out and about it's when he is like you Sao out of the beam, if were mooching in the woods ect and he dissapears il whistle an he will come back, but it's when he has visibly bolted and gone after something other than that he isn't too bad just ignorant sometimes

sounds exactly the same as mine mate spot on when out walking dose yours seem more keen whilst out on the lamp aswell like mate

mine is fine recall OK lamp off right back all fine that is till he caches is pray then he is a t-@-t he stands off about 10 ft and will he come to me like f---k

if i walk off he will follow me with pray in mouth only when he chews on it he will drop it and come back . well that is till last week now he eats the heads off the rabbits

before he leaves them . i think i am going to invest in an electric Collier anyone used one to good effect

His problem is not ignorance, but lack of discipline.

 

When he is running and you call him, he decides that continuing to run is more fun than coming back to you. He needs to learn otherwise.

I suggest the electric collar.

Used appropriately - and you need to read the instructions - they work well.

 

Discipline always seems "hard", but the better controlled a dog is, the more he will be able to hunt.
