Guest busterdog
Feed them yourself, it's the only way. I had a bitch take the heads off four pups, we hand reared for four or five days and she slowly started to try and muscle in. I was a bit nervous about letting her but i took it slow and bollocked her many times when i thought she was just about to take another head off. She took to feeding again and there were no more mishaps. Quote Link to post

lurchers 2,761
she could be trying to protect them and the only way is eat them or if she was near other dogs to see as a threat but if its her 1st litter mate it could be through stress. 1 Quote Link to post
long dogs 580
how olds the bitch, like other fella said she could know there ill have you been round her all the time or have you just left her on her own with pups good luck with the rest. Quote Link to post
dastardlydeed 9
i'd muzzle her to let them nurse and clean them up yourself. dont risk losing the rest. eclampsia and other medical issues can cause bizarre behavior. 2 Quote Link to post
Guest dee mac
had a mate whos bitch had eleven pups she ate nine of them and reared the last two that came along no bother at all very strange behavior indeed and why she done it i aint got a clue. Quote Link to post
Guest THE BEATNICK
keep the bitch calm and put the pups on her to feed then move them away from her put them under a heat lamp after you make them piss and shit, keep this up and let the bitch get used to them it can take days or sometimes not at all but hopefully she'll start to lick and clean them, dont leave her with them till your confident she not going to harm them Quote Link to post
Raymond 618
I had to do it recently with a Glenn bitch and 2 pups. She had to be sectioned and when she came through from the drugs, she was all groggy and wanted to eat the pups. I took the pups of her.I kept them in a box with a heat math under kitchen roll. There was a good few layers so the kitchen roll would absorb urine and stop the pups getting burnt of the heat mat. What I done was every 2 hours take the pups out of the box.I would lie the bitch down and hold her while the pups suckled. Some times I would have to hold the bitch down for an hour or so at a go. 2 hours later from taking the pups of her I would put them back on and hold the botch down by the head. The thing aswell is you need to wipe the pups arse and genitles to stimulate them to go to the toilet aswell as cleaning them. You are mimiking the bitch licking them. I used warm water with a pich of salt in it.You will need to wipe around the edges of the cords on the pups belly utill they fall of.Thats if they are still there. I done this all through the nigh for 2 weeks befroe the bitch slowly came around and I felt I could trust her. She was a great mother after that.I think the section and the drugs messed her up 1 Quote Link to post
sallie 67
This happened to me with my first litter of patterdales three weeks ago, its devastating but you can save them. I have 4 left out of 7, 2 were born detached placenta and first born she attacked. firstly it was my bitch first litter and im sure she thought they were rats as she tried to eat the first one because it was squeaking. In turn i got stressed and she got stressed and we got more stressed and she got more stressed. Next, as the last 4 were born we took them and put them in a warm bed while we calmed down, got the bitch sorted, fed the pups with a dropper and then gently re introduced the pups onto her teats and she started to accept them. It was hard work for the first week watching her all the time. However, it was better than hand rearing. I also believe it was natures way of ensuring she didnt have to many to rear. I have been told its quite common in a first time bitch that is a worker. I now have 4 strong healthy pups for the future. If i can be of any help give me a pm. Just to also add, its interesting to read that i am not alone and this thread has brought this problem into the open. Half the time people wont post stuff like this in case they get ridiculed and no matter how long you have been breeding there is always something new to learn or experience. Quote Link to post
