CarraghsGem 92
Dog slashed in attack - owners warn others to be on guard Wednesday, July 27, 2011The Sentinel LP.has("followUser"); FollowTHE owners of a dog which was left a bloodied mess after a suspected knife attack are warning others with pets to be on their guard. Dan the springer spaniel suffered several slashes across the muzzle, as well as cuts to his ear and hind leg, in the incident outside his home. SCENE: The couple's back yard in Wolstanton. LP.has("fader"); [/url] • • Owners Brian and Kim Edmonds, of Lily Street, Wolstanton, above, are convinced the injuries were inflicted intentionally and fear the perpetrator could strike again. Kim was at home on her own with Dan and the couple's other springer spaniel Stig when the attack happened at 12.15am on Friday. She had left the back door open to allow the dogs into the property's secure backyard, while she listened to music in the living room. Kim, aged 20, said: "I was listening to my MP3 player when I heard Dan whimpering from the backyard. I got up to see what was wrong and saw him walk into the house covered in blood. "There was several deep cuts to his head, and there was a cut to his ear as well. All I could see was blood everywhere. I was panicking a bit as I tried to sort him out. "He looked really unhappy. He kept walking in circles and collapsing, like he didn't know where he was going." After attempting to stem the bleeding with a towel, Kim called the police and her husband, who was at work at the Pets At Home distribution centre in Trentham. He came home and the couple took their dog to the Vets Now emergency vet in Longton. Dan's injuries were cleaned and the cut to his leg was stitched up, and he was later prescribed antibiotics and painkillers. Brian, aged 48, said: "The vet told us that Dan had been quite lucky, because if we hadn't brought him in he could easily have bled to death. "The vet also said that the injuries could not have been inflicted by another animal, like a fox or a badger, as the cuts were too straight. There's a chance Dan might have got caught on something sharp, but I can't find anything like that near our house. I believe someone must have used a knife. "Our backyard has a 6ft fence so we usually leave our back door open at night so the dogs can come in and out. I definitely left the back gate locked, but when I came home I saw it was open, so someone must have come over the fence. "We sometimes get groups of youths drinking and smoking in the alley, but it seems this time someone's gone a bit further. "We've talked to our neighbours about it, but nobody saw or heard anything. But now we just want other people to know that someone did this to our dog." The couple say Dan is slowly recovering from his injuries, but they no longer leave their dogs in the backyard on their own. A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: "We are looking into how the dog's injuries could have been caused. We are appealing for any witnesses to come forward."
