been making my own cider for a long time now but i have always got a bloke in the next village to press it for me This year im still going to get him to do the big barrel(40gall) but im going to try some smaller barrels myself ive had a few ideas of here and youtube .Just had a go with a black & decker garden shredder that i bought from a auction for £15 im over the moon with the results when i picked up the pommice i could squeeze the juice out with my hand .Now to the press.

I made some myself last autumn with a vigo press and a pulper that attaches to a drill but it was very hard work was thinking of getting a tree shredder myself for this purpose only.

I made 3x 5 gallon barrels and i must say i was well pleased with the results 3 pints and the games up lol.post-20963-0-70045900-1311710595_thumb.jpg

Hi fellas sorry to jump in on your thread but I love my cider and would be really interested to make my own,where would I get all the info needed to kick off and what time of year would be best to start.

sep/oct the best time to do it go on real cider and perry web site .Or try and find someone local that could give you a few tips

Thanks for that oakey,where would you get the apples from if you don't have your own trees and what type(havent been scrumping in years)

Me and a mate made a load two years ago, one lot using wine yeast the other just with the yeast on the apples. The natural yeast was much better, only thing is it lacked depth of flavour.

I have since been told that real cider can only been made with cider apples.

There was a program on tv a while back where oz clark tried cider made with a mix of bramleys and desert apples i think it may have been made by monks . He was amazed that a good cider could be made with that mix and he's meant to have one of the best pallets in the world we in the vale of Evesham could have told him that 30 years ago.

just made my first batch,4 gallon from just short of a barrow full of apples,i made the press from some timber i had knocking about,i made a frame and i use a bottle jack,it only cost me £7 for the bolts,and it works a treat,an ive got a barrow full of pears which im gonna do when i get back from camping :thumbs: im teatotal but i know an awful lot of pisspots :laugh:

Just finished the first 5 gallon . All went well the scratter (garden shredder ) was good the press was ok but left the sides of the cheeses wet might try putting some slatted boards between them and increasing the size of the block on the top . Dont think im going to get the 40 gall barrel done in this way may take it to my mate who has a much larger nearly industrial press and scratter that will do 40 gall in 20 minutes .
