Truly Inspirational - save 5 lives in 5 minutes!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Before you turn away - there is no money being asked for here!

I organised a speaker to come along to my club last night and give a talk, all I can say is wow! As the title says, truly inspirational. The founder of this charity has been dealt 2 terminal, incurable lung diseases. She is making it her mission before she dies, to get an extra 10,000 people signed up to the organ donor list.

She is asking for no money, but literally 5 minutes of your time to help save 5 lives in the future! If you decide to do this, then please make sure you visit her website and follow the instructions. If you go direct to the transplant list, her tally does not increase! You still get directed to the official NHS site, but you must email her personally as that is the only way she can know numbers.

I know a good few people give blood. I personally may not be here if it wasn't for these people. My mum has had a liver transplant 5 years ago, she would not be here if it wasn't for people on the transplant donor list! This really does make a difference and will affect many lives. If she gets 10,000 people signed up - that is a potential 50,000 lives that can be given, changed or even prolonged (and that's not even counting family, friends that will benefit from extra time with a loved one).

No replies needed, just please have a peek at the site and if you want to save some lives, please sign up to the list. The way I see it, when I die i'll just sit in the ground rotting - or I can donate and saves some lives. I know other people will think differently, but i'm not really asking for a slagging match or any flame wars.

Cheers guys,

Ben

"Would you take an organ if you needed one? Most of us would but only 28% of us have joined the online Organ Donor Register. More than 10,000 people in the UK currently need a transplant. Of these, 1,000 die each year – that is 3 a day.

Save5 is all about asking people to register online or to check that if they have already registered their personal details are up to date so that in the event of death, their organs and tissue can potentially be used to Save5 other lives."

Why is there a donors list anyway??? Wouldn't it just be easier to say that everyone is a donor but if you dont want to then sign something to say otherwise. Same with giving blood, why dont they go r

That's a new one on me Malt.   Donated cartilage. Whatever next

Whats worse; saving the guilty or condemning the innocent?

Funnily enough it was only a few months ago that I signed up to the donor list: something I've always said I would do, but never got around to. Good on you for bringing this to peoples' attention

I think lots of people are in the same situation skycat. They have thought about it and know it makes perfect sense (I appreciate, not all feel that way and fair enough) but have never got around to doing it. Hopefully this is a little kick up the bum for people that have thought about doing it! It is literally 5 minutes of your time. But if you do, please go via the save5.org.uk website so that T gets her numbers bumped up before she departs!

If i'm completely honest, my mum had a transplant a few years back. A guy in Irelands final good deed was providing my mum with a liver. Without him, I would likely have no mum! But still, it was only yesterday that it dawned on me I hadn't signed up! I think I remember ticking a box on some official form many years ago (maybe a driving license), but I have since hopped, skipped and jumped across the country. I would urge all that have signed up any length of time ago, to recheck all of their details. Things like changing name, getting married or moving house really screw the system up.

Thanks to all

Just a quick update from T, thanks to you guys...

You are right to assume that some people have signed up as a direct result of you mentioning Save5 on the various forums. A huge, huge thank you to you. Just to let you know that the figure this morning at breakfast was 2,017 and now it is 2,027!!! Thank you.

If you have previously signed up to the donor register, you may want to check your details. The system doesn't work effectively if you have changed your name, married or moved address. Please sign up, re-register and/or check your details. So many people mean to sign up but never get round to it, and sadly good intentions aren't an adequate replacement for a heart or liver. Please consider this a gentle reminder - literally 5 minutes of your time has the potential to save 5 lives!

Spread the word if you can, i'd love to help as much as I can :)

Same with giving blood, why dont they go round the doors getting it.....i'd quite happily give blood but i probably wont go and give it but if i got a chap at the door right now then not a problem.

@scothunter - no problem mate. I appreciate it's not for everyone ;) The eyes seem to be the less ticked box for some reason. I don't get it - but I am sure there is a reason :)

@Kay - thank you very much. Make sure you let T know or she cannot update her total...

I've been given an extra 7+ years with my mum. Although the disease has recently started attacking her new liver. No chance of retransplant this time due to age and other underlying kidney issues. But hey - it was an extra 7 years wink.png (whether we used that time wisely is another matter. Families hey)

If any of you signed up a while back, on your driving licence for example, it might be worth registering on the site again. The transition to electronic documentation wasn't great. Plus, if you have moved house or got married/changed your name, your details will need updating!

Ta very much all of you

I have no connection to this cause other than being directly affected by it and subsequently meeting T and hearing about what she is trying to achieve.

I would imagine some think the eyes are maybe a bit to much for some people.suppose cause they are visable.if they brought in legislation where the donors had more of a say where there organs can or cannot go to.id have no prob becoming a donor.

anyway im happy for you and your mum mate i sincerley hope you have many years together still

Well I got my badge in the post this morning, but it was the envelope & what was on it that made my day.. thanks very much for the personal touch

I've never seen the envelope, when I signed up it was face to face with a form.

What was it?

I ticked the box when I got my driving licence, but I'll reregister just to make sure.

I personally think that we should adopt a policy where concent is assumed unless you opt out. Why people worry about what happens to their body after death is beyond me. A corpse is a fecking corpse! But it could literally save lives. Feed my rotting body to fecking rats for all I care.
