What is your ideal deer dog fro stalking?

If you could have your choice of breed for stalking deer what would you choose and why? I have only very recently taken up stalking and I am intrigued by the ability of deer dogs for pointing etc.

I have two dogs at the moment a HWV who is now fading a little but still well up to the job and my new pup a BMH .She is doing ok and i like her stile. Any dog that will walk to heal and find me a shot deer with out any fuss would do me just fine.

We use my lurcher and a mates black lab,

The lurcher is average, but keen.

The lab is superb................thumbs.gif

Cant see past him TBH, he does all that is required.... I am sure others will disagree.....

 

You'll get no disagreement from this poster. A good well trained lab is as good as any of the fancy continental stuff, and a first rate pup can be had for a 1/2 of the price. One of the best deer dogs I have ever seen work was a Lab x German Shepard.

 

Still I suppose there's some kudos to be gained from having the latest must have stalking accessory on the end of your lead. :hmm:

      Hello!
      I'd love to learn more people's opinions on deer hunting using dogs, as it's a very controversial topic in the hunting world. I've only ever used dogs for grouse and waterfowl hunting, but many hunters also use for deer. I write a little hunting blog on the side for fun (this is not an ad, there is no ad/affiliate on the blog but let me know if I can't link!) and I really want to write about the dog hunting controversy.
      What are your opinions? For or against, why, why not etc? No judgement, just trying to get the general hunting population's opinions!
