see if you can team up with someone else who uses their dog/s. it may help to give your dog an idea as to what to expect... keep taking him out after them and he will pick it up. having a rag of one that has been caught helps them sometimes... stick with it!!

get a live mesh trap and leave it in there, let you dog see it and keep egging him one with encouraging tones and words, get him soo worked up that hes screaming trying to get the rat, open the trap door and bobs ya uncle, if he aint bothered then just keep at it, going with seasoned dogs will help to

as above but dont let the rat out of the trap for the dog, cos that would be illegal  hide the trap with the rat in, and let the dog find it using his nose. let him get interested in the rat running backwards and forwards, then take him away. next time you get a rat in a cage same again with the trap, but hide it in a different place. cover it with junk, branches timber old carpet. whatever is at hand. when he gets interested in the place the rat is, move the junk. this will reinforce marking. the dogs interest in getting to the rat should increase each visit. the dispatch a rat  and let him have a rag of it. once he gets going there will be no stopping him.

it is sometimes difficult for a new dog to fit into a pack...there is a definite pecking order in a pack and sometimes a new dog will take a bit of time to find his feet... yes a rag on a rat already caught by one of the other dogs will probably help. the important thing is to keep him at it...all of a suddent it will all click into place and he will be away.
