Bradley943 9
Well this is my first post, so id like to hello to everyone to start with I just wanted to tell you all a little about me, where i come from and what i do etc. Im Bradley, im from Northampton, and was at college last year making me 17 years old, ive always been interested in hunting, i played hunting games but they just werent enough, ive always also had an interest in guns/motorbikes, and have been target shooting in the garden since i was about 12/13, but recently i recieved a 'BSA Supersport .22' in a trade with a few old fishing rods i had laying around, put a new scope on and zero'd it in as best i could in the range availible but need a better silencer/suppresor if anyone has one going cheap/spare . so i took the gun out on thursday morning to a friends patch of land, the weather was sh*t but at least i was out, and could say to myself that i was hunting, but i came home feeling rather wet and sorry for myself as i thought i would at least get one bunny! but no, nothing but today, well this morning from about 9-1pm the weather came true, and was a bright/warm day, i found some pull over camo gear that my dad had when he used to hunt, (owns an air arms s410 carbine .22) so i go down to my friends field and pull on my camo, and start to stroll where the bunnies have been hiding, i crept up to the wire, and took a shot at one that must have been about 30-40 yards away, i missed and saw no bunnies for ages, but in the fields there is small grass about a foot tall, and if you walk through that, a few hares will dart off into the distance, not quick enough or acurate enough to make a clean kill shot with my .22 so i leave them to run and hopefully they will stop within shooting distance but most dont. but i crossed into another field, and saw a hare laying/sat down eating, i drew a little diagram of my shoot below when i came through the gate at the top i came round the side slowly hoping to catch a small bunny off guard, but no i saw the hares black tipped ears poking out the grass, i crouched and got pretty close, then did some army crawl stuff till i was within shooting range, took the shot and hit it in the eye, it dropped first time, i was really impressed with myself as its the first animal ive ever shot myself and it was a clean kill!, but i put the hard in the kill bag after getting its wee/poo out of him, and took it back to my friends house who is going to skin/gut it for me, and hopefully make some nice food but what im asking is, how can i see more bunnies? ive seen about 4 in 2 days shooting, i mean im not expecting them to be taking over the fields, but 1 or 2 coming out of the hedge line every 10/15 minutes would be nice, or is this going to be false hope? is there a time of day that best suits the bunnies? and on the map looking thing, can you see an area that would be best to shoot at?? the 2 lighter fields now have crops in and the woods/water at the top aren't hers so no luck that way either. thanks in advance, Brad Quote Link to post
19powell90 89
hey brad nice shooting yes rabbit are very active early morning and evening through night. you will see them in the day but more tend to be out at these times. keep target practicing trying to hit a 1" circle at various ranges 20m,25m,30m,40m etc. the killzone of a rabbit is below the ear and behind the eye ( if unsure search google images there will a drawing ) atb with your hunting scott Quote Link to post

rossi_j 99
Why wouldnt you shoot a hare? and why not in july? have i done something wrong? nothing wrong atall mate, people have differing opinions about season's and dispatch methods for quarry, shooting hares with an air rifle is fine and pheasant and partrige and duck (in season, with permision). No closed season on hares mate, however it is better to let them be during summer to preserve sport as they arn't really a pest as sutch and so they can care for young ( so there are more for you to go at in future ). Some of the people who tell you that you shouldent probably think nothing of taking as many as they can during winter. I dont see the problem your first kill a single hare in summer, well done hope you enjoy it, tastes great! .atb. .ste. Quote Link to post

ftm 3,357
as an ex lurcher man i always believed a hare should only be killed by a single dog and not a bullet and before anyones says owt i took great pleasure out of seeing my dogs chase a hare WITHOUT catching it . i think it would be fair to let them see the summer out before you shoot any more tho mate 1 Quote Link to post

Bradley943 9
thank you guys, relly appreciate the help, i'll leave the hares be till winter at least and concentrate on trying to get these bunnies into my scope doesnt seem such an easy job when ive only seen about 3 so far, i used to ride my motocross bike round her fields when the crops had been cut and while racing around i wouldnt be surprised if you nearly hit a rabbit, they dont move tilly our right near them, then they shoot off but now i have a gun and can shoot them they all hide Quote Link to post
