k9delboy 138
Thanks for reading this lads. I have recently got 22 rim fire and shot gun certificates. I have a 12gauge over and under that i bought from a friend. I have a fair bit of ground to shoot on as i am terrier man for local hunt and im friendly with a lot of farmers. I want to concentrate on pigeons. I have been setting out decoys to bring them in. My problem is TRYING TO HIT THEM. I have tried aiming in front, aiming at them, aiming behind them and although i am getting a few, i would like to be able to hit a lot more. Is there anywher in Fife that you know of who would give me lessons or anyone willing to teach me how to shoot properly. There is a clay pigeon place in Kirkcaldy but i have not approached them yet. Do these places learn you or do you just go and hope to be as good as others ?. Would really appreciate any help, Del. Quote Link to post

Unless you are flush with cash I wouldn't go and pay for lessons, but maybe just some extra practice on the clays and you should find it all comes together, and everyone that does clays likes nothing more than to point out where you are going wrong and what you should be doing lol! We were all like you when we started out, so don't beat yourself up about it you will find it suddenly clicks into place and you will be hitting nearly all of them. Good luck fella. Could be down to gun fit or gun choke........or maybe your slow and half blind.... Get the gun checked for fit first and for decoying pigeons i'd like an open choke for them..... Quote Link to post

The Duncan 802
I've recently (this year) been through this, having been a rifleman all my life. I invested in a couple of hours coaching at the local clay ground and practised on clays to 'get my eye in'. Now I can pretty much ace on the pigeons whenever I want although I'll never be a clay champion. Money spent now in tuition will reap its own benefits and set you up for life. If you're decoying pigeons and sensibly waiting for them to commit to your pattern, do what Archie Coates said, and use your shotgun barrels as an imaginary paint brush and 'paint them' out of the sky, pulling your trigger as your barrels overtake the bird and keep the 'brush' moving. If you were closer, I'd happily give you a hand. Good luck and all the best, Duncan. Quote Link to post
owdnorthener 13
Hi Del, I was in the same boat a while ago and went alone to Cluny to practice ..... it took a while for things to gel, but I did improve. It just takes a while, then you'll have more confidence and skill when it comes to shooting pigeons. If you fancy visiting cluny sometime and would like company, then Pm me and we can arrange something. ( its normally quiet just before lunch time, if you can make that ? ) regards Alan Quote Link to post

I have shot in the past as i stayed on a farm for 10 years and i can hit a running rabbit no problem but when i point my gun in the air, i am sh*t. I was at my sons 2 weeks ago to shoot vermin as he is a keeper and i did manage to shoot 20 pigeons and 9 crows but this cost me 95 cartridges. My boys boss said, next time i come up i have to buy a bag of wheat and scatter it around as i will be cheaper feeding the birds than shooting them. Mind you, if it came to digging foxes i would give him a run for his money. Thanks for all the replies guys, it is much appreciated to know that there are people on here willing to help other, Del. k9delboy 138
Can i just say on here a big thankyou to Owdnorthener for meeting up with me at Cluny clays today and spending 3 hours watching me atempting to hit clays whilst giving me some brilliant advice. The advice was really appreciated and i did hit a few clays. More to the point i met through this site a new friend and we are going to be shooting pigeons next week hopefully. This site proves that although there are a lot of fannies out and about, there are still a few good guys willing to help people in need, Del. Quote Link to post
