Terrier man 38
Well your not keeping them but only have them at other peoples kennels....Pointless unless its for a short space of time while your own kennels ar being set up. Thats all well and good but some folk dont have any option......for some folk simply being around dogs and continuing to have a foot in the door means other people owning their dogs.........not everyone has the luxury of being a hardcore 24/7 365 day a year dog owning huntsman.....some people just have to take what they can get it dont make them any less into dogs Well kenneling your dog yourself has nothing to do with being a "hardcore 24/7 365 day a year dog owning huntsman" as you put it. As iv stated i just think its pointless unless its for a short space of time . I know what your saying but i never said anyone who does it is any less into dogs as i know not everyone is in the position to look after and kennel what dogs they want but imo they should wait till they ar. I Look at it the same as racing greyhounds used to keep and train a few dogs years back and you have the men who train there own dogs and men who get theres trained by greyhound trainers personaly I never saw the attaraction in giving your dog to someone to be trained as nothing comes close to the feeling of watching a dog you have condtioned and trained to this level passing every other dog out there or leading from trap to finnish and its the very same as a terrier doing a days work or a lurcher coursing , catching and killing game. You,ve missed the point of what i was saying mate....but it dont matter. As regards greyhounds....it depends whether your looking at it as a hobby or a competetive sport.....very few dogs in top competition are trained by anyone less than the top trainers of the day.....if your son was a promising boxer you would want him in the hands of a top trainer with experience and a proven record rather than having a go yourself.....but i do understand what your saying.............like i said though, some folk just have to take what they can get
baw 4,360
My dogs have been at the mates for the last 4 to 5 months. Both are retired and I pretty much take care of them but if he never took them f**k knows what I would have done. I'm not going into the reason why on here but sometimes life throws you a curve ball, shit happens and you need to turn to true friends for help.
scothunter 12,609
had 6 greyhounds in my kennels at times, and tbh some of those so called proffesional greyhound trainers were shit.ive seen the state of some of the dogs comming from thier kennels.i kept all my racers myself, like terrier said, nothing better than seeing a dog you hae put loads of time and work into crossing that line first.like i said if i had to keep my dogs at someone elses place id give them up,thats just me though,no offence to anyone whos circumstances dictate keeping them at another kennel. What type of tracks and what grade racing though ( not being nosey and that aint a direct question )....very few top level races are won by dogs that are not off the known top trainers. Yep i know what your saying the games on the slide in general.....sky tv are perking it up a bit at the moment but thats unlikely to last.......if not for the bars/restaurants at tracks there would be no greyhound racing anymore which is sad really.I used to own a number of dogs that ran at Walthamstow till they closed it down a few years ago ....They was with Mick Puzey,i was conditioning another breed at the time we used to swap the odd thoughts and ideas....i soon realised when it came to actual conditioning i probably knew a lot more than he did....but then he had a 250 acre farm to house 200 plus dogs with 20 odd staff and could dedicate his life to it ....and i didnt Thats all i meant by the top dogs being with the top trainers......but yes,its not the most straight laced of sports Edited July 20, 2011 by gnasher16
YOKEL 2,321
i've known plenty who kennel out dogs elsewere, be it pups to be brought on, or older ones resting up etc. can see no wrong in it, as long as you trust the other party. hunt kennels often put pups out to be reared then bring them back when their ready for work. depends what you want in a dog, be it soley for sport or an allround companion. yokel. dare 1,103
Have only 2 people I'd trust too look after mine and I've actually got more than 2 mates believe it or not just know these 2 have the experience and treat their dogs same as me if not better. Would only be if I was on holiday or something.
