watchman 256 Posted July 19, 2011 Report Share Posted July 19, 2011 (edited) remember going out with your first ever lurcher on that first night to get it going on the lamp and hoping beyond all hope it catches and retrieves its first bunny right into the palm of your hand so you can do that crazy thing where you look at your dog like its the best thing that ever took a breathe . winds blowing like a good un rabbits on the stubble long way out,you pick your target walk it up hissing at the dog to let it know something is about to happen,dog keen ears pricked scanning the beam looking for the intended target,the particular bunny sits tight as you approach it may lift its ears before sitting even tighter,that was the only slight bit of movement you needed to convince you the dog has seen it so you slip. what happens the dog runs straight past it,as the dogs running the rabbit lifts and starts heading for home,so what do you do,you lamp it up while trying to get your now running around like a lunatic dog onto the target,and at the same time"yes you start running the rabbit yourself hoping and preying that from beyond the darkness your pride and joy will emerge into the beam and lift it"of course this doesnt happen,you stand there wobbling and panting like a demented giraffe and wonder where it all went wrong i think in the early days i ran more rabbits than the bloody dogs did what crazy things did you as a newbie do and laugh about now Edited July 19, 2011 by watchman 5 Quote Link to post

coney clucky 93 Posted July 19, 2011 Report Share Posted July 19, 2011 OMG that is hilarious Worst thing is i have envisaged doing the same thing with my pup when she starts this season, will let you know which of us catches the most between her & me i bought my first lurcher 20 odd years ago of a good freind she was excellent working bitch on bunny and long ears lamping so id got my first dog and was keen as mustard to get out and get my first bunnyor two on my own id seen this bitch on several outing take 20 plus on the lamp what a total disaater the very first slip ended the bitches life at only two years id slipped her on a rabbit which ran straight for cover and the bitch was right up its arse rabbit bolted from cover and on to road and a on coming taxi killed her not straight away police and vet came and vet put her down as her legs and tail were broken the road she ran onto was always quiet back road didnt realy go anywere id not paid for the bitch as yet so had to pay vet bill and for dog and damage to taxi so all in all as well as lost dog and well gutted at that was also well skint for while my first trip on my own was a baptism of fire and id learnt lesson never take things for granted and when you least expect things to go wrong they generaly do Quote Link to post
