lamping dummies

or am i just a dummy with a lamp

 

keep noticing lately on here lads mentioning they train their dogs up by taking a dummy out with them throw it and lamp it up to get the dog looking down the beam and retrieving,is this becoming common practice now as i never really heard of it years back,retrieve training in the garden field whatever but not lamped up.

 

do you think its a good idea where you can possibly iron out problems with your dog before entering for real,surely the way is to prepare the dog to the best of your ability,get it to the required standard of obedience and get out there on them green early season bunnies,choose carefully and slip the dog,your own experience dictating when and where to slip to give the dog every chance of a success.

 

iv never lamped a dummy in my life although seen a few dummies out there with lamps and dogs over the years myself included at times so I'm not pointing fingers

 

so who does this and whats the reason for doing so,not something I'm ever likely to try but hey we all live and learn i might be missing a trick here

It does have its uses imo especially for squatters though they can get used to running the dummy and they can tend to run half-hearted knowing its not going to run.

never heard of anyone sickening a dog on a dummy ,but i have had the odd dog over the years that took for ever and an age to spot sitters,some just seem to get the hang of it instantly others you begin to wonder if the penny will ever drop,perhaps these would have been good candidates for lamped dummies

true john, they do get to no its not going to move. But its way to start with to get the to (look) down the beam when training. What i do is get all norm training done 1st sit+stay stuff+recall,in the day. Then do all that in the dark = everything done to the beam, sit+stay+recall. just drop dog 10yds 1st then recall back to the beam. Once they know you training in the dark, and not fecking about move on to dummy work. just the same throw it 10yds, make sure the dog see's it land then let him go. When i 1st (time) take a young dog out in the lamp for a rabbit, i will do 1-2 retrieves with the dummy as to get the young dog focused.And then the real thing lol, and 9 out of 10 will forget all this and try to run around like a nutter after the rabbits .But it will click and does really help with young green dogs, and ive done it for years with my dogs. Some young dogs just click and will use the beam like a seasoned dog, but others with lot of prey drive(full on type) this above can help alot.

ive used dummies for years i think it began about 30yr ago out of frustration i had a cracking dog that just never got the idea of sitters, could catch allsorts for fun, he was obedient, great retriever ideal apart from this. half a dozen dummy sessions and a couple retrieving dead rabbits on the lamp and hey presto maybe wouldn't work for everyone or every dog but works for me.

I did it a while back to try, just outside in the field for a little bit, shone the light and then belted a tennis ball down the beam, did it maybe 3/4 times and the dog learnt to look down the beam (i had a problem with him being nose to floor before that).

I've already got my pup looking down the beam but I'm sure it would have been a good idea to lamp my drag lure.
