I may sound stupid! But I need to ask

Recommended Posts

As above, I may sound daft but....

I've had my permission for a very long time now, in witch I do all my field sports, ferreting, shooting, lamping etc...

But trying to gain new permission is very hard and almost impossible, I have managed a few more. Now because it's been so long the last time I asked for permission. I'm wondering if I'm going about it the wrong way! [bANNED TEXT] I wear? [bANNED TEXT] I say? How I approach? Etc...

My main question to you guys is how do you go about it? And [bANNED TEXT] do you say? Do you offer anything in return!

It just seems to me these days approaching new land and owners they act like I'm a criminal!

Have things changed?

Cheers

I always wear smart casual clothes. i.e moleskin trousers and a checked shirt. I also show them my insurance and mention the farmers who already let me on there land. Have your details already written down on a piece of card so the farmer can keep it handy. Even though he may not give you permission at the time theres a good chance he'll contact you if circumstances change. Try and get a reference from the farmers/landowners that you already go on thsi will help.

I'm very fortunate as i live out in the sticks and i've had farmers actually coming and knocking on my door asking me to control the rabbits on there land, this is because the farmers who i already do the rabbiting for have told them i do a good job and that i'm trustworthy and responsible.

Likewise - I go and politely ask if I can go on their land. Tell them what my dogs are for, stress that they are stock broken, offer to bring the dogs up so they can see them with the sheep/lambs and tell them which other farmers I have permission with. So far I've not had a knock back. I often give them a ring earlier on in the evening I'm planning to go on their land just to let them know I'm going out there. At Xmas I'll take them a bottle of wine or something as a gestrure and when I catch anything which is a problem on their land I let them know.

A way i got quite a bit of permission was because i live out in the sticks and farmers tend to go to the local pub, go a for a few weeks etc if you can and get talking with them but at first nothing about lurchers etc just have a good old craic if they come to like you chances are when you ask later on down the line they will say yes

Most land i hvae comes through contacts so people i know, my wife knows, parents know etc... if you have exhausted this then try

Offering to do something help wise around the farm.

Another one is keep an eye open for stuff like sheep that have got out etc.. fences down etc help put them back or put them back yourself then go and tell him about it.. he has a problem with a fence. then ask him

Was out driving with the family the other day and passed a farmer and his wife in a field opposite the farm house, as i passed saw this little daft dachshund cross the road behind the car, turned round and went to let the farmer know his dog was running loose adn 'didnt want it to get run over' the little shit tried to take a lump out of me but still managed to get some permission out of it.

Someone mentioned local pubs, that will work. Also before i gt married we did the whole pretending to be Christians for a bit so they would let us get married in church (wife wanted to) and there were loads of farmers there. but going to church regular is a bit too far for me just on the off chance may get permission... still while i was there managed to land some more permission.
