ratting with ferrets.

Recommended Posts

hello all,

i have recently been reading a lot of brian plummers books and he is very centered about ratting with ferrets. he seems very experienced in the practice and seems to know his stuff. i would be interested in doing it and what i want to know is anybody still doing it or ever done it and what are experiences etc. have things changed like the toughness of ferrets etc? thanks.

whats the hassle? do the ferrets get mauled? not arguing just asking  and anybody else feel free to add good or bad points ideas etc thanks

mine got pretty well marked up and we only got 11 rats but the ferret was in a really long time. i know some lads that go ferreting rats and they enjoy it but they've also had ferrets killed by rats.

my dad does, in our garden, with my ferrets. we only use a particular ferret because she 'seems' to be good at it. i found her in rat holes and assumed she must have been doing well, the neighbors said she'd been there ages. we used to have loads of rats in our garden, i got some live traps and put them, with the rat in, in the ferret run (closed)all the other ferrets showed minimal interest but this wee jill was straight over doing everything she could to get in. my dad still does it in our garden but just to clear them out. we would kill them only our brittany seems to catch them and let them go

she's never had a problem, no scars, scratches etc. she's too fast for them  not all ferrets take to it

If my memory is right, molly and millet used to put up some cracking ratting posts with pics! They used ferrets regularly and seem to know the score. See if you can find any of the old posts or if ya lucky one of them may see this thread and give you their experienced opinion.

One thing i will say is know the ground you are working, there is one thing doing a bit in a garden etc, but at a farm, you might be facing more rats than you think and the runs are very likely to go under concrete, into wall cavities etc.
