See if someone will be willing to let you tag along this season so you can see what its all about. Join the irish falconry forum there are quit a few lads from round your way.

ATB martin

sound, ill look up that forum and see can i find someone ta tag along with this season. then if its for me i could buy a bird next season. it would give me time to save for the bird and equipment and make a place for it aswell.

try spending a season with someone over winter as its not always a bed of roses as alot think it is as they see the birds at show ect and i feel these shows ect should be banned in the uk as its making the sport to accesable and people are just going out buying a bird with hardly any knowlage and that really p>>ses me of as no end.i have seen it ovr and over again birds getting mistreated, lost over and over again due to these shows and falconry centers doing bird days ,these are all about making money period .i beleive you should have to do an apprentaship before you can get a bird ,this way the falconer with have the know how and experteese to look after the bird and will hve shown the comitment to have leanred the ropes .the bid comes first not buying one cos people just want one

the top book to get is falconry and hawking by phillip glasier and i reckon you need to read that and get out with someone aswell and make sure your mews/aviary is up to spec but you should start with a harris hawk mate but dont think you will be catching many pheasants to start with but stick with it as you will not regret it but do plenty of research before rushing into it also there are some good dvd's by nick fox on training, nutrition, breeding e.t.c but honestly do as much research and get out with someone and also get a mentor, good luck mate

i agree totally with this there would be alot less 2nd hand harrises on the market . thats the problem people get a harris fly it for a season then sell it on becase they feel they are ready for something else . these people will never know what a well trained fit harris is capable of achieving .. awesome birds

:clapper: :clapper: Bang on the money. Its a shame as many discarded HH's are put on the market after their first year if not sooner, they never get to reach their full potential.

many are treated as a stepping stone far too soon, How a so called new falconer is supposed to learn Falconry handling skills by flying a bird for one year and moving onto somthing else is beyond me.....

all i hear is GOS ,GOS GOS ,i have owned and flown gos;s anre there bloody hard work i feel ,if you work fulll time i dont see how on earth you can give this bird the what its needs are you need to be out i feel5 times a week and getting its a good slip and a kills under its belt to keep it fit .i did not enjoy flying them and unless i got the time i wont again ,redtails are bloody awsome birds and very underated and you can learn a hell of alot with one more so than a harris and i ALWAYS tell new people to get a red never a harris ,
