vizlauk 1,568
Anyone got any tip's on shy rabbits, On my permission you can not get within 120 yards of a rabbit, as soon as you lay eyes on 1, that's it they go to ground, I have on many occasions found good hiding places to wait on them to come back out into the open, but they must be aware that im around, As they dont seem to come back out, even after 30 - 45 minutes, it's getting to the stage that im thinking of packing in, or at the very least wait until the crops are cut, as it seems a waste of time going out, the other option im thinking about is setting some snares, but thats taking away the reason for having the s410 ! Each time I go onto my permission the rabbit are about, There some that are very good sizes, I just need some advive on getting a good shot at them ! Sounds like you could be shooting over ground which is quite open? Most planted fields are a waste of time shooting, as they are normaly planted edge to edge, no verges to work. But.....when they are harvested, there should be some good pigeon action, and a bit of bunny activity. All I could suggest is....keep the wind/breeze in your face, approach your permission/ quarry accordingly, dont wear deoderant/aftershave,wash your kit in rain water no soap or detergents etc, break up your shape, be carful of your silohete, use the natural cover if possible, i.e.stay tight to hedges, use hollow ground, cover of walls etc. Move very slowly/quietly, and pause regulary, look up aswell as down, watch your footfall. If you manage to get within a reasonable distance, watch the behaviour of the quarry your after, dont be in to much of a rush to get a shot off. If you do drop a bunny, leave it where it is, and give it a while to see if another will pop out for a look, especially on a known warren. Just a couple of ideas mate, more will follow for sure, hope its helpfull to you, good luck ATB. Bill. Quote Link to post

secretagentmole 1,701
Sweeney has come up with a lot of the problem I think, might I just ask what you use to stalk in? Camo, even cheap stuff, can improve your chances considerably, I use cheap DPM camo NBC suits! Most guys on here laugh at them, but I have had very good results stalking using these cheapo camo suits. Modern ones are made of a combination of materials, an interior rubber charcoal lined fabric and an outer that is semi waterproof polyamide fabric that makes very little noise. They have the bellows type pockets that you can put ammo, range finders, gloves and all other sorts of kit in. The hood is good at covering most of the face as well. If you want a set of summer camo strip the liner out and remember when using them do not wear your best gear underneath, the charcoal does come off a bit... If you can afford a top quality set of realtree or camo then buy it, but if you cannot, get a couple of the NBC suits, get the scissors out on one and have a summer and winter camo outfit! I have used the suits to stalk pigeons, doves and rabbits! Edited July 18, 2011 by secretagentmole Quote Link to post

Rabbits 10 - vizlauk - 0 lol. Time to turn the figures round. Do you kit up on site or kit up before you get down, getting into camo near the permission can put them off as they see arms flailing like windmills and some divot bouncing up and down swearing and making a noise like a pile drive, I found after that it was best to get into camo before I left the house! Simple things like not slamming the car door, making sure you are ready to take a shot even if loaded down (I have had rabbits as I have been walking down the track fully laden), you have to be ready! But remember big rabbits only get to be big rabbits by surviving man, fox, stoats, eagles, cars, shotguns, air rifles, kids with sticks (those were the days) and a whole host of other predators! They are the hardest to get, I know, there are several on my permission that are very wary, so have rested it for a few days to give them a rest and let them forget! So do not go down day after day after day, give them a week off, sometimes it pays to let them forget! Edited July 18, 2011 by secretagentmole Quote Link to post
Guest vin
taiblo A9 with asphical lens kit,gun mount and go out at dusk.. get settled in and wait till there out and about..try using a red lens also..easy enough to make if you already have the LED torch kit... if they are shy with lamp also, deffo use a filter and then they have no chance. As Vin sais have you tried lamping? i had a similar problem that i knew there were rabbits there because of the farmer telling me but could not get site of one any closer than 100 yards in the day, went out and bought a lamp on sat and went out that evening and with in half hour i had 2 in the bag. good luck jamie Quote Link to post
Devonhunter ! 9
Sounds to me thats its been over worked , your best bet would be to lamp it but only now and again or they will soon get lamp shy also. Quote Link to post
vizlauk 1,568
I always get rerady at home before setting off to my permission, as for parking, I park up & walk the 1/2 mile to the location im having problems on, I will have to try a late night - early morning to see if the lamp does the trick, as for the land being overworked, im yet to see another shooter about when im there, but that's not saying there's no one about late - early morning etc, The rabbits days are numbered, im going to make it my mission to bag them, via pellet or snare, Viz Quote Link to post
matt_hooks 188
No-one said it was meant to be easy, if it was then it wouldn't be any fun! The fieldcraft to stalk up to a rabbit takes a lot of effort and trial and error to acquire. You can't just expect to pick up a gun, wander into a field and shoot a load of bunnies (unless you're very lucky and find a place where they've not seen much human interaction). For a beginner, the best bet is to find a place near a known warren, downwind, and lie up before the time that they will normally come out. Bunnies in general are crepuscular (meaning they prefer twilight at both ends of the day to come out and feed) so getting there very early in the morning and being ready and waiting at sun up, or late in the afternoon and waiting for dusk, often pay dividends. You still need to pay attention to how you get into position, so you don't leave a smear of your scent over the area that can cause them to go heads down. Cammo isn't the be all and end all, if you use natural cover properly and keep your movements slow and natural, then bunny doesn't care if you're wearing the latest all singing all dancing realtree all in one suit or a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. I've used both and had good, and bad days with both. The most important thing is to run several tins of pellets through the rifle. Confidence that when a shot finaly does arise (and it will) you will be able to make it will help you with everything else, and will ensure a good clean kill. Lamping is an option, but it brings with it a whole new set of challenges. Not least, with an air rifle, the challenge of range estimation at night. If you can set up with the lamp so that buggs will appear at a known distance then you make your job far easier. If not, then a laser range finder can be of use, or just spend a few nights going out and estimating ranges until you can get it fairly accurate. Good luck, and don't give up! Quote Link to post
