I love hedgehogs and the population has definately reduced greatly over the years, i used to see them all the time as a kid and now they aren't a common occurance. Many years ago my garden was a regular hedgehog highway and the poor blighters used to squeeze under the 2" gap at the bottom of the runs with obvious consequences  Had my old dog find one a few years ago on summer exercise and he carried it 3 miles back to the car 'cos he didn't want to let go

Had a foster/rescue dog a few years ago that nailed any mammal he could get his teeth into. I used to walk him late at night and one evening he managed to get into the shrubs and came out with a mouthful of hedgehog, he was making a racket and shaking his head like crazy then loosed the hog at speed straight into my left leg :censored:

My leg swelled up immediately so off to the local A&E where they booked me in as "attacked by hedgehog" needless to say i had just about every doctor and nurse in to take a look at my wounds and 1 witty Doc counted the holes i'd got and said "with 27 pricks in 1 night no wonder you are sore and can't walk properly" :whistling:

I can laugh about it now but those spines really are sharp!

One of My old cane Corso Bitch's used to dive into cover on a regular basis and come out with a Hedgehog which She would crunch-up before I could get it away! Mouth full of Her own blood but didn't give a crap and would do the same time after time in the end I was catching Hedgehogs and dropping them off at the local rescue centre,.Pain in the Ass.

Once had a woodcock on the lamp, seen the eyes, slipped the bitch and she took it just as it rose, she almost had an owl another night. She had picked a rabbit and it was squeeling like hell and the owl swooped down and the bitch droped the rabbit and leaped up and just missed the owl, thankfully as i think they are really lovely birds.

my old collie bitch had the knack of killing them without hurting herself if they dared walk through her run at night she somehow prised them open and ripped out their bellys, not a scratch on her, i never saw her do it because she was clever like that, but i regularly found the carcass on its back, guts ripped out and a collie sat there looking at me, not a mark on her
