ballycotton conger

to cut long story short just moved east cork went fishing for mackerel this evening in ballycotton caught a dozen cut one up as bait put it on size 1/0 hook caught a dogfish and then to my suprise a 4ft conger, tried to lead it around pier to the steps to unhook but it snapped the hook off,just wondering if theres anyone on here that has fished for conger from shore especially from ballycotton if so what rigs hooksize breaking strain etc you use

we took a few conger from the pier over the years but like you wrote geting them up is the hard bit.We use 20 lb line,I think we used a 2\0 hook with mackerel strip.It was always after dark we fished and it was a good craic trying to hand lift them in.

sound lad were u using wire or mono for the trace if you dont mind me asking

wire trace allways.We took one home at one time and after guting we found 3 hooks in its stomach,our hooks that we snapped earlier in the evening,the same eel fed from us all night long.We lost more than we caught in tuth though.

I do like the congers...The very best of them I have caught on 80 - 100lb line through to a wire trace with a sufficient lead above this to hold the bottom. A 10/0 hook with a mackerel flapper on it always seems to work well. I believe the rumours of congers not taking frozen bait are nonsense...A monster close to 50lb took my old frozen fillets!

 

I have also found the biggest and baddest congers are usually right below your feet :victory:
