lampingkid 56
hi my name is daryl and i have just got a sproker spaniel just wanted to ask if any one has got one and are they good for beating and shooting. at the moment i am trying to train it the basics like sit, stay, lie down. he is also upsest with tennis balls. so i have been throwing the tennis ball in to the jaggy bushes and he finds it quickly and brings it back but dose not drop and he circles me is there any dvds or somthing to help me thanks daryl Quote Link to post
eddie1 2
try it in the passage of the house or ally way some where narrow so he can,nt get round you use a rolled up sock or a puppy training dummy, tennis balls keeps rolling then it becomes a game of chase !! which you do,nt want do,nt throw it too far a few feet in front of you to start, the main point to remember DO,NT OVER DO IT, spaniels get bored very quickly, how old is the dog if it,s only a pup then forget about the retrieving , and just let it be a puppy . lampingkid 56
aw thanks he is only 10 month do u know if they are good at beating ans stuff. Quote Link to post
eddie1 2
at ten months the dog should be old enough to train what training have you done with him ? keep all your training fairly short and varied, stick to the basics, i have a two year old cocker and training is a pain i think more through boredom but when the season starts everything seems to fall into place, cockers, springers, sprockers no difference its what you put into them. lampingkid 56
i spend al most al daywith him and my whippet cross they bond really good and am going to to take him tpo beating and when i play fetch he dosent drop and circles me so but tring to train him to brop he loves rakeing about inthe brambles and stuff Quote Link to post
eddie1 2
leave the whippet at home when you take him out, you want to steady him and not run about with a whippet. have you got him on the whistle ? Quote Link to post
TRF-JRs 6
Get the basics built in first, might seem boring but they're the foundations for the rest of your training. Sit and stays, make sure you always return to him while he's young - don't recall him. Practice recall when he's minding his own business just whistle him in with loads of encouragement. One thing I learnt from my first spaniel is if you want to take them in the beating line don't let them wander too far away from you when you're on a walk, need to keep them nice and close, they will always range out once they're on game. Make sure he sits while you throw the tennis ball, if he moves you pick it up, if he stays seated send him calmly for it. If he is running around you, keep your back to a hedge I'm no pro but that's worked for me so it's something for you to get on with. For beginners Joe Irving- Training Spaniels is a good read. And like the others have said, leave the whippet at home while you're training it, dogs tend pick up more bad habits than good sometimes Quote Link to post
Mooch. 177
I had this problem with my lab x springer. I solved it by only doing retrieves down a narrow footpath with fencing on either side for a few weeks. He got it eventually. 1 Quote Link to post
