First time out with the dog

Recommended Posts

Well, im sick of sitting in the house on the sick so i pestered my Dad to come pick me up and do something, after a couple weeks trying to break my 3yr old patterdale to the ferrets we decided that its time to give him a go in the field, just to see what hes like.

we decided to go to a farm that doesnt have alot of trees and bushes in most parts, for obvious reasons. We start netting up and the dog is already got his head in a hole with his tail going mental, unfortnatly this set goes onto a neighbouring field which we cant go on, typical that this is were the rabbits bolted. After about an hour we are a little ways up the hill and we hear the sound of running underground.. Unfortnatly my dog was too busy catching flies but as soon as the rabbit bolted he jumped on it...not quick enough, the rabbit ran back down but was still in the net, now im in a pot so i cant really run at all.. My dad was right next to the rabbit but he was too busy egging the dog on >< by the time i get up to the hole to stick me hand down (he always makes an excuse not to!) the rabbit had got free... 10 mins later heres the ferret with blood all over him! .. BUT at least the dog didnt bother the ferrets in all the excitement and this is his first time out so we dont mind so much.

We move along the hill a little bit more and again, hear the sound of running.. for a good 5 mins the ferret must of been chasing the rabbit, almost about to put the second one down and I notice my dog is right over in the middle of 2 holes "watching" the pattern of the sounds, I thought I would leave him see what he does and BAM! rabbit bolts and hes on it straight away, he held it down I told him to drop it, dispatched the rabbit and gave him it aswell as lots of praise.. even in all the excitment the ferret was running around his feet and he just sniffed!.. After that we decided to call it a day it was very hot and I was very tired cos of my foot.. we got back to the pickup and got some pictures of the dog and ferrets playing together with the rabbit, they all had a drink out of the same travel bottle and he just treat them like the puppies at my mam n dads house!

1 rabbit but we set out to do what we wanted... get my dog and ferrets working together! Im so happy with him and altho the negative comments i had from some people about him being 3 year old and a terrier, I knew that he was obedient enough to make it easy!

got some pictures but there on me Dads phone so ill get them when he picks me up to take ferrets to vet for castration

hope you enjoyed reading the very happy day I had yesterday.

Mate I understand the reasoning behind your trip out but why would you be ferreting in July? It's not pest control and if it was for the purpose of breaking your dog to fert's.........thats easily achieved in your garden.

The fert coming out covered in blood could well have been a nest of scutties,if it was thats a fair few less to go at come season.

Don't mean to sound negative mate but you are killing your in-season sport.......afterall you are ferreting as a hobby rather than as pest-control.

came out full of blood cos it killed the rabbit that went back in, we dug it out. sorry didnt mention that.

the farm i went to is literally wick with rabbits, the reason there wasnt many in the warrens is because we just parked on the bank instead of where we normally do, let the dog out the pickup and scared all of them into the bushes over the fence. We knew we wouldnt get much with the ferrets the floor moves with rabbits on this farm...its more of a shooting farm .. the only reason we went to that one is because the land we decided to try is open.. apart from the bushes across the fence, i will never wipe out the rabbits.. especially since the only other people allowed on it are the phesent lads and they ignore the rabbits now that we are there with the air rifles and ferrets so im not exagurating when i say it.

its way up Carlton banks in the north east, anyone from around that area can vouch for me on the amount of rabbits lol

its hard to know what the dog will be like until hes in the field, especially if, like me, this is your first time ever with a dog and ferret ..i wanted to know how he would be when excited, one rabbit plues the one we dug out is not going to put any dent at all in the population. yes its a hobby to me... thats why i went out...

plus ive been stuck in the house since april near enough i needed to get out this seemed a good way to kill alot of birds with minimal amount of stones lol.

so i know tons of people dont ferret during the summer,or even agree with it.. this one day ive been out literally was a way to see what the dog was like in the field after the time its took to get him used to the ferrets at home.. you cant tell me there is no difference... and to stop me turning into a recluse :tongue2:

to add: the ferrets are currently getting castrated,(poor buggers lol) im getting 2 jill kits tomorrow so i wont actually be out till september time from now anyways, which i will be working 2 jills one hob... 1 day is nothing, especially when its in the quitest spot. We also have to go to that farm at least once a month, since it took us a year to get the permission we dont want to loose the best of our 6 permissions.. tho its with guns up there 9 times out of 10 :)_

thought it would just be nice to let people who have givin me tips on the dog know how well it went is all

Yea you said that would happen....Mate I really cant wait haha... It couldnt come quick enough.

Quick question instead of making a new thread...

Will he be broken to all ferrets now? Im getting 2 kits in the morning and will be working both of them and one of the ones I already have come the season.

Just repeat the same process you used with the other ferts in your garden he should be fine.........just watch how the fert reacts to him.

The new fert may be a little defensive and it could come across as aggressive to the dog.
